You Meant It!

You meant it when you said it. And that's the part that stings. You stood there and you promised God you were done with that thing. Whatever that thing was. Whatever that thing is, whatever herd habit or hang up that thing is.

I've been delivered. You stood there and you promised God. You mean every word. Every single word.

It wasn't argued away. It wasn't even decided again. You didn't even make a conscious decision to go.

You just quietly said it down. Like it never mattered. And now you can't look up. Because how do you face someone you swore to and then failed inside of a single week?

You're not the first to do that, and neither am I. Today we're gonna watch an entire nation do the very same thing. Faster than you'd even believe. On the exact ground.

I swore they never would. Welcome.

And it has nothing to do with me, it has everything to do with hearing the truth, um, and and being given, being asked, do you do you want to place your do you want to be well, as Yeshua said? Do you want to be well? So, anyway, that's why we do what we do. So here's what you have to feel, and and this is sort of the biblical context of it. Here's what you have to feel to understand this chapter. The timing of this is and it'll appear to you. It'll be clear. By the time we're finished today, it will be very, very clear. Amen, Tammy. Amen. Praise God, hallelujah. Uh, that is a fact. So the the horror of it isn't only what they do, it's it's when they do it. So I want you to come up the mountain with me in your mind. God is still speaking, he's describing the tent he wants to live in, right in the middle of his people, saying it over and over. I will dwell among them. He just handed Moses two tablets of stone written. The text says, with his own finger, God's own finger. And while God is upstairs, remember, um, the the rarity of this, uh, of God physically touching anything here on this plane, uh, it happened at the uh on on Noah's Ark. Noah, uh God Himself closed the door. God himself. Anyway, I just found that interesting and it's free, tidbit for you. No, no cost, no charge, no obligation, just free. So he so he so he writes the tablet with his own finger, and while God is upstairs describing how he'll move in, the people downstairs are already throwing them out. Remember whose people they are. So remember who these people are. Weeks ago, they stood at this mountain and they heard God speak out loud in thunder and fire that shook the ground. And the first thing that voice said was, You shall you can almost say it with me. Hey, Sean spelled correctly. Good to see you. First thing that voice said was, You shall have no other gods before me. They heard it and they answered. Together, everything the Lord has said, we will do. Remember, if you've been listening with us, you undoubtedly have heard that. But days later, this is the story. Moshe or Moses has been gone 40 days, and 40 days is a long time to wait when you're afraid. The people get restless and crowd around Aaron. Make us gods to go in in front of us, because this Moses, the man who brought us out of Egypt, but we don't know what's become of him. Now, before we throw rocks at Aaron, and before we throw rocks at the people of Israel, the Israel that is forming, remember this. They didn't know if he went up on the mountain and God struck him dead. Did he do something wrong? Did he fall down while he was climbing up? He was an older dude. Moshe was climbing. He's an older guy, and he's climbing up, and there's lots of bad things that can happen. And they don't know what to do. They're like, man, we're we're in a jam here. So Aaron folds, he collects their gold, and he melts it down. Imagine this. So they've come out, they've got gold, they've accumulated some things. All right, everybody, you know, give me your gold. We're gonna make a thing and we're gonna we're gonna worship it. We're gonna shape it into a calf. The Hebrew is Egel. Spell Ain Yemel Lamed. A young bull, an image of raw power, the kind of God the nations carried. And the people look at this thing that's existed for about an hour, and they say the words that should stop your heart. These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt. What in the world? They hand the whole rescue, the sea, the chains, the eagle's wings, to a lump of jewelry they made that morning. And here's the part most people skip. Aaron tries to make it religious. He builds an altar in front of the calf and announces, Tomorrow is a feast to the Lord. He slaps God's own image on their idol. And the next morning they bring their offerings, and then your Bible probably says they sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play. Now, I want you to stop on that word, play. Because your translation, no shade, your translation just made a decision for you and it didn't tell you. And what follows is why you must seek the ancient Near Eastern language culture and context in order to understand this clearly, accurately. Doesn't make me, I don't think I'm any better than anybody else. Trust me on this. And no shade to your pastors or your teachers or Sunday school. Hey, no shade on them. They just don't know. They just didn't know. I'm no smarter, I'm no better. I just was hungry and am hungry to understand it clearly, accurately. So here you go. The Hebrew, and it's a strange word. It's letzak. You kind of like spit it out. It's from the root tzak, spelled tzad tet or ket kof. It's the same root as laughter. It's the root behind Isaac's name. But in this form, in this setting, it isn't innocent. It carries revelry, mockery, and by the reading of most scholars, sexual sin. So when your Bible quietly says play, it's tucking a blanket over a scene that has gone completely over the rails. Massive orgy. Drinking and just utter debauchery. When I say completely off the rails, it's completely off the rails. And understand, when when I, you know, there's a million reasons why the translators, and remember the King James Version, most of the translators of the Hebrew couldn't speak Hebrew, couldn't read Hebrew. They had no idea. So um I'll get that to you. Robbie, send me a question on True Words, Faith for Life, what where uh what right where this is, because I can't stop at this point, but I will I will absolutely give it to you. But by the way, I'll be quoting it here we go as we go. But thank you for the question. So the holy meal they shared with God on this this very mountain. Hold on one second. Let me get this, it's gonna drive me crazy. So um so where where this is, it'll help you narrow it down, is Exodus or Echodos 32, chapter 32, verses 1 through 35. So that's that's the kind of the arc that I'm teaching on this morning, and it and it's in between. So I hope that helps you, but I will I will get you the exact one. So the holy meal that they'd shared with God on this very mountain. You remember this? This is curdled into a drunken party around some golden animal. The apostle Paul, or his his actual name is Shaol. You just you just gotta dig JTEC 99. I'm and I'm encouraging you to do that. So I just gave the passage, and um let me see if I can write it. I don't know if I can write it in there. No, I can't. Let me see if I can do that. Let's just see. We're gonna try something new here. Free of charge at no cost or obligation to you. Oh, there we go. It did work. There we go. We're gonna put it right on the broadcast, right on the screen. Hooya. Dig in. So this is this is some crazy, you know, debauchery party. And Shaoler Paul, the Apostle Paul in the New Testament, he saw this clearly. And when he warns the Corinthians, listen, don't be idolaters. This is the verse he reaches for. Right? He's not just whipping this out of the air. This is what he's going back to. Everything is connected. Listen, if you don't learn the Old Testament in the ancient Near Eastern language, culture, and context, you will never understand what the New Testament means. No, no, no, it's no worries. Uh, just meant about being able to read Hebrew, Doctor, I mean it with respect. Oh, no, no, no. No worries, I'm not offended by it. Yeah, it's it's um, I actually, you know what? This is a good time to tell you guys. And some of you know, um, sometimes I do Bible reviews, I collect Bibles, I love Bibles, all different kinds. And so sometimes I'm asked to do a Bible review, and people say, Oh, well, you know, you throw shade on on the uh on the King James, or you throw shade on this one or that one. Um, you know, and I don't mean to do that, but but these are just facts. They're just facts. Much of the um, as we research, we go back, we see um the there was a lot of pressure on the King James. Anyway, the point is, is there's a um, I do a couple of Bible reviews and uh on True Word, Faithful Life with Dr. Sean, Shaw N. It's the one with about 4,000 uh subscribers. I encourage you to watch that because I go in deep on that. And the uh corresponding blog post on True Word, Faithful Life with Dr. Sean and study guide has all of my research material right there in a Turabian style um uh bibliography. That said, no shade. If you grew up with the King James, I grew up with the King James. I have several King James that I wouldn't part with ever, ever, ever. I don't actually ever give away Bible, I don't ever get rid of Bibles, I give them to people. Um, or and through our ministry, by the way, I don't know if you guys know this. We used to do a radio show. Um, it was much, much bigger than this, and it was humble. Um, I didn't know how to monetize it, I had no idea. But and some of you listening are um, some of you listening are, and this is important. You might say, Well, you're chasing something through a backyard here. It is important for you to have any trust and faith in what I'm saying. But this this little group of people um called the Kehla, they uh in Newark, Delaware, at the Stableys home, Jill has gone on to her reward and and John. I miss that gentle, kind man. It was just it was the most fun I ever had ministering to people. And so we did a live broadcast, didn't have any idea how to do it. If it weren't for Sean McLaren, I would have no idea. We would never even get out. Anyway, so I did a uh weekly show and then we did that Sunday show. Well, in that several of the people are listening here, and they will tell you that um I use many, many different translations, but there are lots of people. Amen. God bless Jill and John, amen. There are lots of people who, and you know, Don Grossman, he just uh passed into his reward, and uh Wes, God bless him, he just passed into his reward, and there are many, there's several others actually. And um, but I but I have to say that I tried to make the point clear. Look, read whatever Bible is is as accurate as you know it can be, and then as you grow, learn the different words and phrases and understand how Hebrew and Aramaic works and how Quinate Greek works, um, and what the words the individual and um you know I I want you to understand that the the deal with the King James is that there are many, many areas where it is structurally inaccurate, grammatically inaccurate. The word doesn't mean what you think it means, and they inserted a word in there like play. Well, that's not what it was, unless you call a wild orgy um play, you know. So you you miss the point, and you miss the point of what an idol is. Um, and so that's the part I'm getting at there. As far as translation, uh, probably now is not the time to go in deep on that, but I'll tell you the primary translations I read. By the way, I have six Bibles next to me, and this is one of them that um, as you'll notice, it doesn't look like any other, but this is one that um one of the six that Melissa at Mooseworks Bible, not a sponsor, um, but Melissa did six of my Bibles that I'm gonna pass on to um my family, and and uh so when I when I die, so uh I want them to last forever. Anyway, how can you know Jesus if you've mistakenly believed he is the father using the son as a puppet? Trinity isn't biblical. Doesn't matter how accurate your Bible edition is if you believe lies. Well, I do yeti. Um number one, I appreciate you listening, and I get it. You you have an agenda, and you're the confirmation bias that you're driving off of is uh just you know, kind of a one-issue thing. And it's easier to cling to that than it is to look at the whole. And I I would encourage you to do that. That's kind of how we do it here. Uh, not kind of, we do it that way here. And so you you may find you may find some peace and solace here and some comfort in being able to believe scripture and understand scripture fully. Not that I'm anything special. Um so as it relates to the King James, it's just important periodically to go, okay, what does this word actually mean? They use the word play, but what actually is it? And so when we don't know the word, when we don't know what it actually means, we kind of jam ourselves up. Anyway, so now God sees it, right? He saw it being made, but he says, I have seen this people, he says, and they are stiff-necked. And in Hebrew, it's which is hard of neck. It's the ox that locks its neck and will not be turned, will not take the yoke, will not go to the go the way it's led. This is what it means. And that's the root of all sin, right? Not mainly a weak heart. It's a hard neck, a neck that won't turn. So then God makes Moses an offer that tests everything in him. Leave me alone, he says. Let my anger burn, and I will destroy them, and I will make you into a great nation. Ur. Do you hear it? Do you hear it? Step aside, Moses. I'm gonna wipe them out and start over with just you, your name, your nation, your legacy. Whew! And watch what Moses says. Let's watch what he let's watch what he does here. He says, no, he won't save himself by letting the people die, right? He throws himself into the gap and he pleads. And notice, notice how he doesn't argue that the people are good, he appeals to God's own heart. These are your people, Lord. You brought them out. Remember your promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And the Lord relented. The Hebrew is Nacham. Nacham. God turned back from the harm he had spoken. Moses stood in the gap, and God relented. God said to Moses, Hold my beer. I love that, JTEC 99. That's funny. But look, that would make an excellent meme or real. But look, it isn't over. Because Moses has to walk down the mountain, right? He's 40 days up there. He comes down holding these two tablets that God wrote with his own finger, and he sees it with his own eyes. He sees the calf that they've made out of gold, the dancing, the debauchery. And something in him breaks. He just after he has worked through all of that. He has led these people, these fickle, fickle people through so much. He's probably thinking like we think now, right? We look back on it. We we have we have the benefit. Here's another one of the loose works bubbles. Um, we have the benefit. Notice the color screen, in case you were wondering. We have the benefit of having scripture, right? Okay, we don't understand all of it, and we have to dig in and learn, you know, the ancient Near Eastern language culture and context. We have to understand what's being said, what exactly it means, the the whole context in it, to understand the whole thing. Yes, granted, a lot of times those that read the Bible don't really know those things all the way. But here's the thing, folks, we're looking at it with the roadmap. We got a lot of arrogance to say, well, we got the Bible here, and we'll look back. You people are dumb. Look what you did. No, no, no. Imagine. Imagine what these people have been through. Imagine the fear, imagine the loss, imagine how they're just broken down by the slavery in Egypt, and and and how they their paradigms, you know, are just fickle. And aren't we the same way? And and Moses, after being up on the mountain, you know, he wasn't having cheesesteaks up there, pats or genos. He wasn't having either one. I can't imagine. And after leading the people of Israel through so much, something in him just cracks. And he hurls the tablets down and he shatters them at the foot of the mountain. My friends, that is more than just temper. That's more than just a bad temper. I just lost my temper. No, it's more than that. Those tablets are the covenant contract, and Israel has already broken it in their hearts. Understand, before he even came down, they broke it. So when Moshe or Moses smashes them at the foot of the mountain, he shows them what they've done. The covenant is broken, and you broke it. Here it lies in pieces where you swore you'd keep it. Then he grinds the calf to powder. He scatters it on the water and makes them drink it. And Aaron gives one of the saddest excuses in Scripture. I threw the gold in the fire and out came this calf. As if nobody did it. It just happened. It was supernatural. As if nobody did it. Nobody ever did do it, did they? When the calf comes out. Then comes the reckoning. And I won't rush past this. This is important for you to get it. You know, I harp already. I've said it about eight times. Ancient Near Eastern language, culture, and context, absolutely critical. I don't want to rush past this. I want you to turn off whatever distractions you have. And I want you to hear it. Moses stands in the gate. Whoever is for the Lord, come to me. Judgment falls in the camp that day. And about three thousand fall. Three thousand people. They had gone through so much. They had made it through. And they get here and they go no further. Sin against the holy God isn't small. That broken covenant carried a real cost. And look, I'm not going to soften it because the Bible doesn't. It applies to me. Applies to you. Our hurts, habits, and hangups, our sin. When we do, we break the covenant. But then the next day, Moses goes back up the mountain to do the impossible. To fix what cannot be fixed. He's he says to God, if you'll forgive them, forgive them. And if not, blot me out of the book you have written. The word is macha in in Hebrew. It's spelled Mimchet He. To wipe away, to erase completely. Wipe me away. Wipe me away. Take me out of the picture as though I was never here. This is Moses. Take my name out of your book, Moses says. Let me be lost if it means they can be found. Have you ever seen anybody willing, willing to do that? Dead pew 101 L O. I don't know. Dead pew, I don't know what the thing is. I would encourage you just to listen. Instead of trying to push an agenda, just listen. You might hear some context here that might resonate with you. Have you? I mean, Moses is throwing himself on the blade, so to speak. And he was serious. Take me out of it. Make me not part of it. Eras me. Let me be lost if it means they can be found. God save these people. And God says, no. The one who sinned is the one whose name is at stake. Even the finest man who ever lived cannot take their place. And maybe there's a calf in your life this morning. Maybe you've handed the glory that belongs to God alone. You've handed it off to some calf, some golden calf. Or maybe it's simpler. Maybe it cuts deeper. A promise. You told God you were done. And you meant it when you said it. You meant it. You meant it with everything in you. And you broke it inside a week. And you've been at the foot of your own mountain ever since. You're just sure the God you swore to has finally had enough of you. I want you to hear this. Shut off every distraction that's around you. If you're driving, pay attention to driving. But if you're able, just put all the distractions away for the moment. I want you to hear this. Israel broke faith faster than anyone would ever have believed on the very ground where they'd promised not to. And God didn't walk away from them. Your broken promise isn't the final word over your life. It never was. So here's your one thing to do today. And it's specific. Take the promise you thought of at the start. The one you made and you've broken it more than once. Today don't remake it. You've remade it enough. And remaking it, it's just one more calf, one more thing that you build to save yourself. Do this instead. Open your hands out loud and hand that struggle to Yeshua by name. Hand it to Jesus by name. Say it plainly. I can't keep this. I've proven I can't. Whatever your hurt habit or hang-up is, whatever that sin that just dogged you, I've proven I can't. So I'm giving it to the one who already kept it for me. Then, before noon today, I mean this, before noon today, text one person you trust and tell them what you just handed over. I get it. If that's the P word, that's tough. Fastest growing audience, but by the way, don't think it's just men. The fastest growing audience, the target audience for the P word. I can't say it because then I this gets blocked. But you know what I'm talking about. Ends with authy. People think it's just men, it's not. The fastest growing block is is is women. Fifty-seven percent. So that's gonna be challenging for you. And I a hundred percent get it. I do. I get it. It's embarrassing. Whatever it is, it's probably gonna be embarrassing. Listen, I had somebody yesterday, and I I I appreciate them listening. They confess something to me, and listen, I've heard it all. I've heard it all. And they confessed something to me because they said, I don't know who else to tell. And I said, okay, let's work through this. I've had people confess that they murdered someone to me. And then we walk them through the process of giving their faith to Christ and then making confession. Don't hide from it. Don't plead innocent. Take your lumps. I just whatever it is, it doesn't matter. Doesn't matter what it is. This person told me yesterday, he said, I I cannot tell you how good this feels. I've never said it out loud. I I have a buddy of mine, we've been buddies for since the 90s. And he said something to me he hasn't said out loud. And he said, I I cannot. I just can't. I don't know what to do with this. And so I'm telling you. Okay, let's work through it. So we did, we prayed about it. And we're gonna continue to work through it for him. It's a hard thing, it's a very, very difficult thing. Whatever it is, text that person. You might say, Well, I'm spreading my business, put my business out on the street. That's why I say tell one person, text one person you trust. Not just that you trust, that you should and can trust. Because most people are blabber mouths. They can't be trusted with secrets, they can't wait to tell somebody. Think about it, but don't put it off today. Before noon. Secret, listen, secret struggles grow in the dark, and the enemy depends on you to keep it in the dark. Drag this one into the light before lunch. And now, I want you to hear why you can put it in his hands, God's hands, and leave it there. Moses offered to be blotted out for his people on behalf of his people in their stead, taking their lumps for them, as though he'd never lived, as though he'd never existed. But you know what he couldn't be? No mere man can take another's place. But I have good news for you today. There is a mediator who offered to be blotted out, and actually was. He was numbered with the transgressors. He was made a curse for us. He was cut off, erased, forsaken, so your name and my name could be written into a book that no fire and no failure could ever reach. What Moses longed to do and could not, Yeshua did. He didn't just pray in the gap, he died in it. The covenant that you and I couldn't keep, he kept. And the name we were sure had been blotted out. He wrote back in, written in red, in his own blood, a love letter, written in red. As you might imagine, I have for you today a challenge and a choice. And here's your choice today. Listen, you you can you can keep standing. You can keep standing at the foot of your mountain, whatever your mountain is, staring at the pieces, trying to build one more calf that might finally save you. Or you can look up. The covenant you couldn't keep has already been kept by another. And he was blotted out so your name never would be. One road ends in exhaustion, the other ends in shalom. Choose the one who already chose you. Robbie, you can trust me, and it, and if, and I, and I look, I know lots of people who are in this situation. They don't trust anybody, and rightly so. But if if if you need that, I'm putting it out there. I'm glad that you have a friend that you you can be real with. There is nothing more important than being able to to being able to be honest.

Listen, one road ends in exhaustion every time.

The other choice ends in shalom. Choose the one who already chose you. Thank you, Robbie. God bless you. I say it and I mean it. Prayer isn't asking for an easy journey, it's asking for a strong back. There is nothing about this faith that is easy. But there is nothing better than living it. I want you to pray with me. Father, we come to you as people who have meant our promises and we have broken our promises, and we've made them and we break them and we make them and we break them. We've built calves out of good things and bad things, and we've handed you the credit for gold we shaped with our own hands. We are stiff necked. Lord, our necks locked against the very hand that's turning us toward life. I ask that you soften us today. Thank you that when the covenant lay shattered at the foot of the mountain, you didn't walk away. Thank you for a mediator, the mediator who stepped into the gap and never stepped out. I ask that you loosen our necks, turn our necks. Unclench our hands, Father. And I ask that you write our names where no failure can reach them. In the name of Yeshua, the one who was blotted out, so we will never be. Amen. Look, if you're sitting there this morning or evening or afternoon, whatever time you're listening to this, if you're sitting there and you have a you're holding this broken promise in your hands, and you have no idea how to face God. You have no idea. This next part is for you. You don't clean yourself up first. You come with the calf still in your arms, just as you are. I want you to pray this with me. Be done putting it off, be done putting it away. Be done being arrogant and proud. And I don't need that. Be done picking at little pieces of whatever aspect of the Bible or theology or the story you think you know, and making that your thing, and everything becomes your confirmation bias. Place your faith in Christ. Handle it today, right now. Pray this with me. Yeshua, I need you. I ask that you forgive me of my sins, my hurts, my habits, and my hang-ups. I believe that you died for me, and that you rose again the third day. I ask that you accept my life and surrender to you today. Forgive me. Fill me with your Holy Spirit, your Rakakodesh. Lead me. Every day I turn my life over to you. In your name. Amen. If you just prayed that and you meant it, I want you to hear this. Don't argue with it. Your name is written now in a book no fire and no failure can reach. Today is your birthday, your real birthday. So tell somebody. You might say, Well, people make fun of me. People make fun of me. So what? You might tell somebody you think is gonna jump for joy, and they're gonna go, You? I know you. Trust me when I tell you. And they're not gonna believe it. Amen. We'd have to have earplugs. No, we wouldn't, we'd be perfect. But but heaven is rejoicing right now over you. And they won't stop. Tell them. Don't be ashamed. He was not ashamed of you. Don't be ashamed of him. By the way, if heaven's already thrown a party, don't celebrate it alone. Share it with somebody. Let somebody else show celebrate with you.
