You Get NOTHING!

The others got the hands in here. A settled life. The thing that says you made it. Would you get you got handed a job and a promise. And we're told that was enough. It's plenty. You watch people your age put down roots and you're still holding a tent stake. Wondering when your turn comes. Wondering when your turn comes. Today God pulls one tribe out of the line. It's the tribe that carried his presence on his shoulders. And he tells them the absolute holy truth right to their face. You will get no land. None. While every other tribe walks into an inheritance, you will walk into nothing. You will walk into nothing you can fence, nothing you can sell, nothing you can hand down. And then he tells them what they get instead. And it's either the cruelest sentence in the chapter or the greatest. And everything depends on whether you believe him or you don't. And uh he was a runner and he had chronic plantar fasciitis, and he was always talking about that. But he always had he had this little saying, out of nowhere, you know, from we worked in like cubicle offices, and he would say, uh, he he would say, get after it, you know, after talking for 20 minutes about nothing, had nothing to do with work. He just out of nowhere, get after it. It's always funny. I always laughed at that. That stuck with me. Good morning, good morning, all. Good morning in the live chat. And uh, it's my favorite passage, I think, in the whole Bible. I just love it. Woman at the Well. Some of you have heard it, um, and I would encourage you to listen to it. Oh, what what chapter? Oh, I love that when somebody has their Bible out. Numbers chapter 18, verses 1 through 32, the tribe that got no land. Numbers 18, 1 through 32. Thanks for asking that. Look, I I ask these questions all the time. And sometimes folks write in there, and sometimes they don't. I don't do it. Well, you gotta get your engagement numbers up. Well, I don't care. What I care about is whether you get it or you don't, whether you get it and you apply it to your life or you don't. What's here it is. This is the question. What's the one thing you feel like everybody else got and you didn't? What's the one thing you feel like everybody else got and you didn't? The house? A house? Marriage? Great kids? Great career? Success? The settled life? You can put it in the chat in the comments. We're gonna hold we're gonna hold it right up next to what God says to Levi. You have to feel what land meant here. In order to understand this chapter, you have to you have to really get what land meant. When you were given land. In the ancient Near East, land wasn't real estate. Land was identity. Land was security. Land was your name continuing after you died. It was the plot your grandchildren, your great-great-great-grandchildren would stand on and say, This is ours, this is who we are. A tribe with no land was almost a contradiction in terms. It meant no roots, no inheritance, no future, nothing at all that you could point to. This comes right after Quran. Yesterday a rebellion tore through the camp over who gets to draw near to God. So chapter 18 is God settling this whole question. Who serves? Who carries the weight of the sanctuary? I talked yesterday about do the job that that nobody applauds for. But also, if you've if you've noticed somebody doing that job that nobody else wants to do, including you, man. I said you could do it. I mean, you could do it this week, but if you put it off, I'm just reminding you, maybe go back and listen to that episode. See what I was saying, so you can put it into action. There are people who do it not because of what they think they'll get. They do it because they say God wants me to serve, and this is the area where I can serve. This is what I know how to do. I think that's awesome. But back in this time in Numbers 18, verses 1 through 32, and actually just a little back before, land's getting handed out. And this is here we are in this in this spot in the Bible, and and people are talking about what they get for it. You're serving, you're carrying the weight, the whole weight of the sanctuary, which I get it, I understand. I I understand it's a huge weight to carry. You think, well, wait a second, I'm not acquiring anything here. Everybody else is acquiring. I'm not acquiring, I'm just serving. And the answer God gives the priests and the Levites, it's gonna sound at first like the worst deal in the whole Bible. Why would anybody settle for that deal, right? Sean spelled correctly says definitely some hard times these days for all of us, but the Lord keeps getting us through each day. You know, it's it's interesting, you know. I I I've mentioned uh a family, a couple, they have great kids and uh successful, very successful children, and um lovely, just lovely. They're they're amazing human beings, right? They're just utterly amazing. And they're wonderful, and they're extremely successful. It worked hard, don't get it wrong. But now they're going through a struggle, physical struggle, a health struggle. That's tough. But even still, they've doing it with grace. It's a beautiful thing. But then I know others. They are on the struggle bus. It won't so badly to to do well and and to and to be well. But nothing seems to work out. As Robbie said, it's sometimes life is unsettling. I don't know about your life. I I don't know. I just know there are some, you look around, you go, man. Oh man, that came easy to them. Seems like they fall into a poo pit and come out smelling like roses. Come on, you know people like that. And and they end up being resented. And she was uh she wore the finest clothes, you know, stylish, and you know when her mother, she never rode the school bus, her mother dropped her off at school, and she drove this humongous Mercedes. And uh she always looked like she'd been to the beauty parlor, that's what we called it back then. Beauty parlor. I know. Um she yeah, it was it was amazing, you know, and she seemed to have this amazing life. And then one day, she hands me a note. Oh my god, oh this girl likes me. She hands me a note and she says, I find you intriguing, which I like that she used that kind of language. I find you intriguing, and I'd like to be friends. Oh god. Would you like to come over to my house for lunch? I mean, we're in high school. I said, I'd love that. You know, I did the note exchange thing. We didn't have cell phones back then, if you believe that. And I went to her house and it was in the neighborhood was wow. And the home was enormous, the biggest home I'd seen, really. Well, I I had been in one other one, but but it was it was huge. And her her mother was there and greeted me, and it was lovely. And and then uh there was other there's people in the house, cleaners, and but like not not cleaners that worked for a cleaning company, cleaners. They were like maids. And and one other person, I don't know what she did, but she was kind of running things. She was like the house manager, I guess. Anyway, and her mom greeted me. Her mom looked very much like her. Both beautiful, and she says, Okay, we'll have some snacks up there in a little bit. You guys go have fun. So I go up to this girl's, it's not like her room, but it's like the anteroom. Like there's a I'm probably saying that wrong. There's like a room outside, and it's huge. And then she goes, You want to look around? I'll I'll give you a little tour. So we walk around and she's pointing this out and that out and all these different things. I'm like, wow. I didn't live anything like that. I didn't resent her. I never have. I was born in such a way that I I uh worked around wealthy people a lot, and I made the connection that wealthy people sign the front of the check, so there's no check signing if I resent them. And there were a lot of people where I grew up that did that weren't wealthy. Anyway. And I remember this girl, we walk into her main room, which was bigger than a whole floor, the whole second floor of my house. And there's this big machine, and then this smaller machine, and then this other thing, and I'm like, what's that? She goes, Well, do you really want to know? And I said, Yeah. I mean, unless it's none of my business, which is if it's none of my business, I apologize for asking. And she says, Well, those are machines that keep me alive through the night. I'm like, what? What do you mean keep you alive through the night? She goes, Well, I have this disease, and she named the disease, and it was super rare. And she looked she looked like the picture of help. Now she did miss a fair bit of school, but I always thought it was because she was traveling. Like they would do fancy trips and all. She said, I I have this disease, and and it's uh my body's fighting itself. And then at night I can't breathe. When I lay flat on my back, I can't breathe at all. My lungs don't work. So this machine, I get hooked up to this machine, and it breathes for me. Makes me breathe. And then this machine over here, I hook it into this port, and then she moves her shirt, and she's got like this semi-permanent port, and it plugs this thing in and does all this stuff, and then this other machine does this or that, and then it connects to a machine in my parents' room, and it has alarms on it, just in case. I said, just in case of what? She said, just in case my heart stops beating, or I stopped breathing even on the machine. It lets them know. Wow. She goes, okay, well enough of that. We walk through and we look, and her closet's bigger than bigger than two or three times my room size. No kidding. It was huge. Had all these little bins and folder sweaters. She was a big sweater person. Sweaters, one after like three in each bin, and then a bunch of them, a wall of bins, bin of, you know, wall of bins, and then shoes, and then you know, fancy pants, and then over here was the jewelry and all this stuff, and I wow, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And I remember walking out of her house after visiting with her. And I remember the the conundrum. Everybody thinks this girl has everything. And before I walked out, I I asked her, I said, how many, how many, how many of the kids from her school have been to your house? How many have you invited to your home? And she goes, Well, first of all, this is not my home. This is my parents' home. Which I like that. And She said, one. I said, oh, who is that person? She goes, you dummy, one. Oh. I said, why'd you why have you only ever invited me? And she said, because I think you're the only one that won't look at me any different, and that you'll understand. And that you'll give me my privacy and not tell everybody about it. I said, you got it. The juxtaposition was when I left out of that enormous fancy pants home. I thought the appearance is they have it all. And the reality is this kid's fighting for her life. She made it to 22 years old.

And she passed away in the middle of the night. So God speaks to Aaron. And the first thing he says is quite heavy. You and your sons and your father's house shall bear the iniquity connected with the sanctuary.

In other words, the ones who draw nearest to God carry the most weight. Not the least. People think pastors got it easy. Some of them do. And uh lot of debt. Working on that. But here's the thing church gets to a certain size, and the pastor can't have personal relationships with everybody. And some people get mad about that. But the thing, the thing is, they don't realize is you know, all that stuff you tell them, the bad things that are going on in your life, and him getting a call at 2.30 in the morning. I get those calls at 2.30 in the morning, and so-and-so has been injured. So-and-so has been, you know, they were sick and they've taken a turn, and this looks like the end. And you go and you be with the family, and sometimes the person is still alive enough that you can talk to them and pray with them. And then you see them die. And you help the family bear the grief. Sometimes they have kids that are drug addicts, and they it breaks their heart, and they have to step in bravely, courageously, honorably, beautifully, and help raise the grandchild, they should be able to just enjoy. That's a beautiful thing. Then there's the couples that are going through major trouble. Maybe some of them are about to get divorced. You know there's bad things going on in that household. And you carry it. You try your best to carry it with honor. Keep it close to your vest, close to your heart, and you pray. You pray for them, and your prayer list gets longer and longer and longer. Ministering is not, you know, the closer you get to God, and I say this a lot and I mean it a lot, this ain't easy. This faith business isn't easy. First of all, in this environment today, I don't know, maybe you've noticed, you know, when Charlie, Charlie was murdered, it reveals something that Miss Colleen and I have talked to her about this for a long, long time. And my children. And I've said, look, you need to understand, there's a part of society that has acceptance that they are not good people. And it's a big group. And that became evident. That became very evident when he was murdered. In Arizona, where their home office is true the uh TP USA. Turning point USA. It's already been defaced. Scum. Because people are scum. You're not gonna talk them into understanding. There's just people that they're committed to it. Charlie ministered to millions and millions of people. And he was close to God. But I'm telling you, it wasn't a perk. Here on this earth wasn't a perk. For the minister nearness isn't a perk. And here in this passage, Numbers 18, oh, not a perk. It's a responsibility with that person's name on it. And here's the thing then, then he hands them the portions, the pre seat from the offerings brought to the Lord. The first fruits, the wave offerings, the best of the oil and the wine and the grain. And he seals it with a phrase that we got to stop on. It is a covenant of salt forever before the Lord. A covenant of salt. Salt preserves. Salt doesn't spoil. So a covenant of salt is a bond that will not rot, it will not turn, it will not go back on its word. God is saying, this arrangement I'm about to give you doesn't expire. But then we get to verse 20. Read it slow, hear it slowly, because this is the entire chapter in a verse. The Lord said to Aaron, You shall have no inheritance in their land, neither shall you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the children of Israel. I want you to hear the Hebrew here. Because the translations are all wrestling with the same two words, and it changes everything. And I get it. It's tough. Ancient Near Eastern language, culture, and context, very, very challenging. They're all wrestling with the same two words, changes everything. You want to know the words? Portion, the word portion is chelec. Chelec. And cheleck is not a spiritual word. It's the surveyor's word. It's the term for measured plot of ground. A parcel, a piece of land marked off with your family's boundary stones. Hello, East Texas Hippie and John Sima John 9951. Welcome in. Thanks for joining us. They're listening on um YouTube. You ever see those boundary markers? You ever live somewhere where the the your the property is marked off with these stones? When this new this new world, if you will, in the ancient Near East, this is how God did it. He marked it off. And they would put down stones on the boundaries. The word inheritance is Nachala, the estate that passes down through the generations. So watch what God does. He takes the two most concrete dirt under the fingernails words for real estate in the entire language, Leshon Nakadesh, the language of God, Hebrew, and he puts himself in the slot where the land would go. Yeah, yeah. Okay, we're gonna leave it from here to there to over here, and this is this is what's gonna be passed down to your family. No, not for your family. Your family, you get me, you inherit me. Every other tribe gets a chelec of ground. Levi gets God as their chelech. That's what Levites get. They get God. To everyone else, the inheritance is a what. To Levi, the inheritance is a who. To the Levites, he gives the tithe of all of all of Israel as their inheritance. The tithe of all Israel as its inheritance, as their inheritance, in return for their service. They won't own fields, so the fields of the whole nation feed them. They gave up a plot of ground and received the produce of the entire land. They traded a corner for the whole thing. Now, here's the thing: you say, wow, country preachers, they get paid with chickens and and side of beef once a year. Twice a year. They get paid, you know, different. In the old days, not so much now. But here's the thing. What do you do about inheritance? Here's the last movement. Verse 25 down. And it's easy to skip, but don't do it. Don't skip it. The Levites, who own nothing, are told to tithe too. What? They own nothing. They eat what is brought in, the leftovers of what is brought in. And they're told to tithe too. They take a tenth of what they receive and they give it back to the priests, the best of it. There's people out there that argue that tithing isn't scriptural. They're wrong. Read the Old Testament. Understand it. Well, that's the age of the law, and we're in the age of grace. We are in the age of grace. I came not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. They take a tenth of what they receive and they give it back to the priest, the best of it. The people with the least are still called to give the first and the best. Because giving was never about having a surplus. It's a declaration that God is enough. I can tell you, Miss Colleen and I have been, you know, obviously, when the primary breadwinner gets disabled and there's no money. Zero. People think you get in a crash and you the person is clearly at fault. They're cited, they get a jail sentence of 19 years because they kill one of their friends in a car, and they were clearly and and clearly clearly at fault. And I was in no fault. And the people think, oh, you get rich. Well, no, you don't. You don't. Oh, they pay your medical bills for life. No, they don't. They don't. Nobody sends a check. Can we still tithe? On what? Nothing. We didn't do it because we're like. Oh. I'm trying to make a I'm trying to explain. I'm trying to make this point to you. People will say all the time, you know, this certain group of people, tithing's not in the Bible. That's the that's the thing they cling to. I'm just here to tell you that, man, don't hold back. Don't hold back. Tithing, it's a declaration that God is enough. The tribe with no land, the Levite, still gives on purpose to prove that the one who is their portion is more than enough to live on. So here's where this lands in your life today. I don't know your life. I want to, but I don't. Some of you have built your entire life around serving, around caring, showing up, being faithful, and you have almost nothing to show for it that you can point to. You have no title. You're not, you're not on the worship team, but you help run the wires and move the things when you know special events happen, and then you put them back and you do that in an empty church, and nobody's there thanking you. Nobody's calling you up saying, hey, look what these fellas did. Look what these ladies did. Hey, there was a big conference here, and a big mess was made, and the cleaning crew came in, volunteers from the church, and they came in. Here they are up here. Here's Miss, here's Miss Colleen, here's Miss Janet, here's Mr. Rob, here's Miss Missy, here's Miss Linda, here's Miss Susan, here's Miss Tammy. They don't they don't do it. Mr. Sean spelled correctly, he's over here running the wires because the wires got all mixed up, because they had to move the stage and blah blah blah. Nobody, that doesn't happen. In serving God, there's there's there's so much you do, and nobody knows about it, nobody points to it. I talked a little bit about this last night. And in many, many many cases, there's people that are that are going to church and laboring. Nobody points to them. I composed this piece, and the cellos um are three specific cellos, and they're very, very old cellos um from uh late 1800s. Yeah, I love the sound of them too. You know, there's lots of people out there that that struggle to make the rent. They don't own a house. They're just trying to make the rent. They don't have a house they're proud of, although they keep their rented place clean. But nothing to pass down. They don't have it. No title, no inheritance, they got nothing. No name that people know. And there's a voice that says, You got a raw deal. You got the raw deal. But everybody else got the land and you got a job to do. Hear what God said to the tribe that felt exactly that. I am your portion. He didn't hand Levi a small or piece of the same thing everybody else got. He took himself out of the general blessing and gave Levi himself directly as the inheritance. That is either a consolation prize or the greatest thing in the chapter. Depending on how you look at it. Depends entirely upon how much you actually think God is worth. Read this. Read his word, open his word every day. Not as a consolation. Listen, if I have any extra time, I'm gonna read my Bible. No, no, no. Make it number one. Make it number one. Make it the biggest thing you do. Make it the top thing you do. Make it the most important thing you do. If God is small to you, look, look, look, look, look, look. I don't know. Are you listening? You gotta hear this. You gotta hear this. Or you will have wasted your time. God, full of God in your heart. Not perfect. I'm not talking about perfect. I'm not talking about being perfect. I'm not talking about God elevating you to some stage. I'm talking about God, the presence of God in your heart, in your soul, in your life. And you're real every day. And that's all you get. That's either some sort of consolation prize, like the uh white elephant game, I think that's what it's called, or it's the greatest thing in the world. It's the greatest thing in this chapter. And which one? Which one? Which one it is? It depends entirely upon how much do you think God is worth in your life? If God is small to you, no land is a tragedy. If God is who he says he is, then Levi got the best portion in Israel, and everyone else got a field, only a field. Those poor people. They only got a field, they only got an inheritance. And you got the nearness to God. Here's the concrete step for today. Take the one thing you named in the chat. The house, the marriage, the career, the thing everybody else seems to have, and write this next to it on paper. God says, I am your portion. Then do the thing Levi did and give something today as a declaration that he's enough. Give the first and the best, not out of surplus, but on purpose. So your hands tell your own heart that the one who is your portion is more than enough to live on. Do it before you go to bed tonight. Now, yeshua. Because he's the whole point of Levi's portion. He is the one who said, Foxes have holes and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head. He owned no land. He had no. He had less than Levi. And he said it plainly. So that you go through his come on. When I think of Yeshua, the clothes on his back, that's all he had. He became poor, came from heaven to be around this bunch of dirt. He became poor that so that through his poverty, you, through his poverty, might become rich. He took the no inheritance all the way down. He took it to the cross. He was tortured and murdered. Between two criminals. Didn't deserve it, never did anything wrong ever. Here's what Yeshua did with it. In the new covenant, he makes every believer a kingdom of priests. Peter says it, Kepha. Peter in the English Bible. John or Jochanan says it, which means Levi's portion is no longer for one tribe. It is the inheritance of everyone who is in him. Everyone who has placed their faith in Christ. You do not get God as a consolation prize for the land you didn't get. You get God as the inheritance itself. Paul or Shaol says it twice over that he is the portion of our inheritance, and in the same breath, that we are his inheritance, the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints. Read that again. The tribe with no land became the picture of the believer whose portion is God, and who is God's portion in return? The psalmist already knew it. God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. The Lord is my portion, says my soul. How much do you want God in your life? How much are you willing to invest in not just seeing this book up on a shelf, but picking it up and making the pages stained with the oil of your hands and the tears from your eyes? How much, how calloused are your knees from being beside your bed and praying? Really conversing with God. You'll notice not one time I said, How perfect are you? I have for you today a challenge and a choice. Here's the choice today. And it's a yes or a no. It is a yes or a no. Is God your consolation prize? You're I'm a Christian. Is God your consolation prize, or is he your prize? Because you'll answer that question with your life. Whether you say it out loud or not. Either you spend your days grieving the field you didn't get. Or you look at the one standing in the slot where the field would go. And you decide he is the better portion. One or the other. One or the other. Answer this before. Answer that those those qu you only you can answer. Come on. I can't make the decision. I want to. I want to make the decision for you, but I can't. I want to so much. I want to I want to impress upon you. That's why I do this. I'm not supposed to do any of this.

That question drives your life of peace. That question drives what you what you live, what you feel, what you experience. It's your decision.

You decide it. It's your challenge and choice for today. But before this episode closes, which is in just a couple of minutes, you can answer that. You don't have to tell me. I'm who am I? Nobody. You and God have a conversation and answer it before this episode closes. My friends, prayer is not asking for an easy journey, because it ain't. Faith is not an easy journey. It ain't. It is not. It is absolutely not an easy journey. You say, well, you know, you're making it sound like prayer and picking up the Bible super easy. Well, it is and it isn't. When we pray to God, when we converse with God, that means we're exposed. But we're exposed all the time. He sees everything we do, every thought. You say, well, I'm doomed then. No, he still loves you. Look, if he can still love me through it, he can love you through it. He does. He's bigger than your dad. He's bigger than your mom. He's bigger than your foster parents. He's bigger than your boss who does nothing but get on your back and never stop getting on your back. He's bigger than that coach that never seemed to like you. My friends. Given your faith, communicating with God through prayer, conversational prayer, through really studying. And this is this is look, you come in here every morning, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. Eastern, and Sundays at 6:30. That's powerful. Those of you who can only listen on playback, maybe you're at work right now. That's powerful. You're making a huge investment. I'm not, it's not me. Trust me. The the great value in it isn't me. But these words, these are true words. The challenge and the choice. Go back and listen to it. And then do it. Let's pray. Father, we confess we've measured our lives by the fields other people got. And you know me. You know my heart. You know I've been there. You know I felt cheated. You know others that are listening to this prayer, live or on playback, have felt cheated. We've carried holy things and and we felt passed over because our eyes were on the inheritance and not on the one who called himself our inheritance. Father God, we ask that you forgive us for wanting a smaller thing than you even offered. Thank you that you didn't hand Levi a corner of the blessing. You gave them yourself. I ask that you do that in us. Make Father God our portion. The Ruach Kadesh, the Holy Spirit our portion, not our backup plan. God, we ask you to teach us. The houses you got didn't do it. You thought it would. I'm gonna get this house, I'm gonna feel fulfilled. The title that you got, you achieved? It's a great thing, but it didn't do it either. The car, man, that car. Oh, if I get this car, and it didn't do it either. And the person maybe that you were wanting to date or marry. It didn't work out either. You keep getting the field and staying empty. I want you to hear this. There is a man who owned no land at all, who became poor on purpose so that his portion could become yours. He is the inheritance the field was always pointing at. You've been dancing around this your whole life. You have. Ever since you had an awareness of God, an awareness of Yeshua Hamashiach Jesus Christ, Jesus the Messiah. Ever since you had an awareness of him, you believed, but you never acted on it.
