Key Takeaways

  • An unfinished life and a wasted life are not the same thing, as demonstrated by the death of Moses on Mount Nebo.
  • God measures our lives by who we know—specifically knowing Him face-to-face—rather than a checklist of earthly accomplishments.
  • Psalm 90 teaches believers to pray for a heart of wisdom by learning to number their days as an offering to God.
  • Underneath every trial and fall are the everlasting arms of God, providing a secure dwelling place no matter what happens.
  • Even when life feels incomplete, 1 Corinthians 15:58 reminds believers that labor done in the Lord is never in vain.

Well, this one. This may be the one that doesn't feel as fun for you. Doesn't feel as uh well. You can you can feel the road. I mean I mean. But I think end you. You can feel the road getting shorter. I feel the tick-tock of the clock getting shorter. Whether or not you have a terminal issue or not. Just age. You just maybe it's hey, maybe it's the birthday. Maybe it's that number. That big number. And maybe it's watching a lot of your friends, a lot of your colleagues, and even people that are too young. You know how we always do. We always say, oh, too young, too young. When we see that somebody died. Hey, maybe, maybe it's the funerals. I mean, if you're a person that goes to funerals, I always say go to the funeral. I preach a lot of funerals and thank you, Miss Cumming. Um, I preach a lot of funerals and a lot of them are for people I dearly love. And every time you stand there, the question that most people get or they they ask, I should say. You know they either they either tell me about all about the accomplishments, the person that's in that casket or in that urn. They tell me about fun times they had when they were young and dumb. Or they tell me about unrealized potential that person had. Or what a tragedy it was that they never really knew how much their life mattered while they were alive. Yeah, the funerals come closer together as you get older. Maybe it's the way your body talks back to you when you're trying to do a silly, easy thing. I don't know, getting in the car, getting out of the car. And a and a and a and a question sits on your chest at night. Did it matter? Did any of this matter? The dream that you had at 30 years old. And it never happened. Or something happened. You did the right thing. And it blew up in your face. Maybe it was the business you had, big plans building, or the career. You had big plans of crafting this really good career. You had in mind a set of accomplishments, or maybe how you were going to feel about that. Maybe it's the father you meant to be before your kids grew up and moved away. Maybe it was the mother that you said, I'm never gonna be like that. And then you ended up being just like that. Maybe. And you kept putting it off and putting it off and putting it off. Oh, busy and busy. She knows I'm busy.

SPEAKER_00

And then you get the call. Mom's gone. There's a promised land in every one of us.

SPEAKER_01

And some of us are starting to realize, well, I may not walk into it. So begs the question: what was it all for? The greatest prophet Israel ever had. Spent forty years leading people toward a land he never set foot in. He climbed a mountain. He looked at the whole thing spread out below him. And he died there on the wrong side of the river. The Bible says three things. Three things about that death that will change how you see your own life and your own end. This is True Word Faith for Life with Dr. Sean. I'm Sean. Yep, this is a book. I wrote it. True Word Faith for Life, pretty easy. A picture of a photograph of an eagle that I and my friends waited all day long for that eagle to come. And he did. And he sat in the perfect spot. And it was freezing cold, but it was worth it. Anyway, I'm not saying the book will change your life, but it definitely will have an impact on you if you let it. By the way, what is this? True Word Faith for Life with Dr. Sean's YouTube channel. I hope you're listening on YouTube. But if you're listening on any of the nine places we're streaming, I encourage you, I cannot encourage you enough, go to YouTube, True Word Faith for Life with Dr. Sean. That's S H A W N. Click on the little bell. We have about 4,000 subscribers, so we're not a huge deal, but uh click on subscribe, the little bell for all notifications, and hit that thumbs up while you're there. Welcome to day 134 of Through the Bible in a year, walking the story of God. Here we go. We're closing out our week. Oh, I dreaded this day. Well, Sunday's coming. I've been working on the blog and study guide on Trueword, FaithforLife.com. It's free. It's all free. You don't have to do any big deal. I made it copy and pastable. One thing I ask is just copy the copyright. This one I've been working on for about two and a half, three months. Takes me longer because I'm brain injured, but I want it to be excellent. Free resource. It'll be there tomorrow afternoon. And then Sunday at 6.30 we get after it. It'll be a busy day. I'm preaching twice. Uh be preaching at Virginia Creek Ministries in uh Virginia Creek Campground at 9.30. That's when we start. No fooling. Start right at 9:30. And uh teacher very comfortable. It's inside, it's air conditioned. Um beautiful place. Beautiful place. Neat is a pen, you could eat off the floor. The people are exceptional. Love for you to come. And if you have one of my books, I'll sign it. Bring it along. Surf City, North Carolina. If you're anywhere near there, love to have you. So we're finishing Deuteronomy today, chapters 33 and 34, alongside the only psalm with Moses' name on it, Moshe. Psalm 90. By the way, regarding my book, if you're ready for God's word to make sense in real life, and you're ready to hear real talk, not fluffy, yeah, you're gonna laugh a lot. And you're also gonna need these a lot. True Word Faith for Life. It's at TrueWordFaithforLife.com in the store. I mean, I dreaded today. I have been dreading it. I don't like talking about Moshe's departure at all. By the way, some of you have sent me messages saying, you look like you're hanging on to that chair. There's a thing, a pad here, and then I'm strapped in so I don't fall because I'm super, super dizzy and something's wrong with my vestibular system. Oh, I have a head injury, but anyway, if you see me listing to either side, it's okay. We've got provisions in place. So, I mean, if we're gonna be real, we've spent the week together. I'm just gonna ask. Because I look, I know me, I know my life, and I talk to a lot of people. And I don't think on this one I'm that far from where everybody else is, but maybe, maybe I could be wrong. But the question Look, some people don't have to wonder if their life mattered. They don't have to wonder if finished or unfinished, they don't have to wonder, they don't have to wonder. But when you look at your life right now, does it feel finished or unfinished? Type either finished or unfinished in the in the chat or the comments below, and that way you'll know you're not alone because I'm sure other people will. Mine's unfinished. And this, what I'm doing, the true word, faith for life with Dr. Sean YouTube channel, and what we do, that's part of me trying to finish well. And it's part of me trying to reach out to you and hope that one day God gives me something to say that impacts your life in a positive and productive way. The biggest thing I always pray for right before we start is God, let this be about you and let this bring them to you. Thank you, Miss Nicole. Getting up at four in the morning to listen live. She says, unfinished. Me too. So here's where we are at the end of chapter 32. Dang it. God told Moses, told him, he said, go climb Mount Nebo and look at the land he wouldn't enter. Why? Why, God? Why would you? Why? This guy has given it all to you. Yeah, he made a few mistakes along the way, small mistakes. Some were big, but hey man. The dude gave up the majority of his life. And he gave it to your people and to do them what you asked them to do. Why? Why would you make him go up the mountain and look over something he's not going to enter? Why? It's okay to ask God why. Go back to Numbers 20, at Mirabah. God told Moses to speak to the rock, but instead he shouted. Hear now, you rebels, and struck it twice. In verse 12, God said, Because you did not believe in me to uphold me as holy, you shall not bring this assembly into the land. One moment, after forty years of faithfulness, and yet the consequence stood. Before he climbs, Moses did what dying fathers did across the ancient Near East. He blesses his children. Jacob did it in Genesis 49, and it wasn't sentiment. A clay tablet from Nuzi, which is now Iraq, modern-day Iraq, records a son who took his dying father's spoken blessing to court and wand. A dying man's word carried the weight of a will. Thank you, Miss Colleen. Colleen says unfinished. Now, Moses or Moshe. You say, why do you say both names? Just say Moses. We know him as Moses. Think about this. First of all, if he walked in the room and I said hi, Moses, he wouldn't know who I was talking to. It's not his name, it's not even remotely his name. Moshe is his name. Why do you say Yeshua? Why do you say Yeshua? Why are you trying to be Jewish? Because that's his name, and these are important people. You should call them by their name. Look, if you kept calling me Steve, I don't mind the name Steve. Steve's a good name. I know a bunch of good Steves, but I'm telling you right now, I'd correct you. And then by the third time I correct you, unless you had Alzheimer's or uh dementia or a brain injury of some sort. That third time I'm telling you, look, man, you call me by my by the wrong name one more time, we're gonna have consequences. Sometimes people do it out of disrespect. And I know you're not doing it out of disrespect. Look, most of my life I the names, thank you, Miss Tammy. Miss Tammy says unfinished. God bless you all for your honesty. Look, I'm just saying that's why I do it, because they deserve for you to know their actual name. And Moshe, Moses. Wow. But that guy did for us. You say, no, no, no, he was a Jew. He did it for the Jews. That's Old Testament. My friends, you will never understand the New Testament until you truly understand the Old. Until you understand the ancient Near Eastern language, culture, and context. You can't understand anything about Jesus, about the Yeshua. You can't. Moses does what that dying man did, because he's a dying man. His word. He did it for the whole nation, not just for his family. Deuteronomy 33, verse 1. This is the blessing with which Moses, the man of God, blessed the people of Israel before his death. Man of God, the man of God. Hold on to that title. It shows up again in a song. Moses blesses tribe by tribe. Then he ends here, verses 26 and 27. There is none like God. O Jeshurun, who rides through the heavens to your help, through the skies in his majesty. The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms. Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms. Ever wonder where that comes from? That old hymn. Underneath are the everlasting arms. In Hebrew, that's Zerot alam. Zerot olam. The arms of forever. Whatever you fall through, however far down, these arms are already under it. And dwelling places in Hebrew, Meunnah. The word for a lion's den. The safe place where you live. Now, open Psalm 90. The heading says, or the pericope, the little, you know, before every part, you'll see the little bold. Usually they're in bold. That's called a pericope. We call it most people, some people call it a heading. I don't know what you call it. It's a pericope. The heading says, A prayer of Moses, the man of God. I have a whole bunch of Bibles. I look through a whole bunch of them, and that's pretty much what's there. There's our title, verse one. You ready? Maybe you are, maybe you aren't, but here we go. Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. The same route. Moses closes his blessing and opens his prayer on the same word. God is where we live. Then the Psalm tells the truth. Verse 10 The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength, eighty. They are soon gone, and we fly away. And verse 12, the prayer. So teach us to number our days that we may we may get a heart of wisdom. And here are the translations part ways. The ESV or English Standard Version says, get a heart of wisdom, something you gain. Get a heart of wisdom. That's something you gain. But the New American Standard Bible says, present to you a heart of wisdom, something you bring. But the Hebrew verb here is Navi. Navi. It carries both. You count your days, you carry a wise heart out of them, and you lay it before God like an offering. Have you ever thought about that? God, I give to you my life as my offering to you. Has it ever crossed your mind? When it crosses my mind in bold print, blinking red with spotlights on it, unfinished. One of my reels that was cut from one of the episodes this week. I talk about the unfinished life, the unrealized potential. I talk about not valuing somebody who really should be important to you, but you haven't demonstrated. That they really are. Talk is cheap. I say all the time: write the note, send the email, send the text, whatever it is, call them. Go by and visit. You don't have to stay forever. Just let them know you care. Now, come to the mountain. Deuteronomy 34, verses 1 through 4. Moshe climbs Nebo, Mount Nebo, Mount, to the top of Piscah. We have Mount Pisca in the Pisca National Reserve and goes through Tennessee and I think through Appalachia. It's huge, it's beautiful. But Piscah is opposite of Jericho. The Lord shows him all the land. Gilead as far as Dan, down to the Negeb, and the city of palm trees. And he says, This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there. From Nebo in modern Jordan, that's where Mount Nebo is in modern Jordan. You can see Jericho at the dead. And I'm just going to say this. All of that is Israel. All of it is. God gave them all of that.

unknown

Anyway.

SPEAKER_01

And he let Moshe see it. But he said you can't go there. From Nebo, which is in modern Jordan, as I said, you can see Jericho in the Dead Sea. But you can't see Dan. A hundred miles north. You can't see it. But God showed him more than the eyes can see. Now the three things. First, verse five. So Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord. The Hebrew says, I'll be Yahweh. Remember what I said, what I taught early on about Yahweh. It's breathing. You're breathing, it's the breath of God. Yahweh. At the mouth of the Lord. The Talmud and Tractate Bhava Batra reads it as a kiss. God drew out Moses' last breath with a kiss. And verse seven says, His eye was undimmed and his vigor unabated. He didn't wear out. He didn't wear out. God took him home. Second. Verse six, he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab. But no one knows the place of his burial to this day. He buried him. He buried him. The Jewish sages read it as God Himself, the man who carried a nation for forty years, was carried to his rest by the God. The God he served. Third, verse 10. There has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew, face to face. How do you want to know God? How do you want him to know you? You say, Man, I want to know, I want to know God. I want to understand. I want to understand him. I want to serve him. I want to be in a relationship. I want to have a real relationship with him. But you don't ever pick up the Bible. You don't ever pray. You don't ever do the hard thing. You don't ever climb the mountain he tells you to climb. It seems like a mountain, but it's not. And what have I said? He'll always be with you, no matter what the mountain is. Third, verse 10, because I can't boo-hoo on this all day. I was dreading this all week. Really for three weeks, because I knew this day was coming. I have no concept of time or what day it is. I have a big thing right there that tells me what day by name and what time and what number it is. Without that, I don't know. But I know this. I knew this day was coming. Third, verse 10. I want you to hear it again. Hear this again in your modern life, how you're living. What does God say about you? There has not arisen a prophet since in Israel, like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.

SPEAKER_02

That's the whole life summed up.

SPEAKER_01

Summed up. Thank you, Glenn. God bless you. Thank you for listening. Face to face. God knew Moses face to face. Not by what he finished, by who he knew. And that line points back to chapter 18, verse 15, where Moses promised, the Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me. It is to him you shall listen. The five books of Moses closed with that promise, still waiting an empty doorway. An empty doorway. So I want you to bring it home to your heart, to your life. You're afraid your life didn't matter because you won't see everything you hoped for. Okay, maybe it's not you, maybe just me. Is it just me? Because look, when the doctors looked at you when you're, how old was I? I don't even know how old I was, but they said, you ain't gonna make it, man. And then again, and then again they said, get your affairs in order. You ain't gonna make it. I looked at my life and said, what a waste I have done with this. I looked at gifts and talents that God gave me. Look, I'm nobody special. I'm gonna tell you that right now. But I had special gifts. Things most people don't get. I just was born with them. And I was born into struggle. And I grew up in struggle. But I can tell you this. Unfinished in bold letters. If you were to bury me, which I'm going to be buried in in a National Cemetery military thing. But the word unfinished. I would think it would be accurate. Put it on the stone and say nothing else. Just unfinished. You say you're lamenting something you can do nothing about. Not true. Not true. But I look at Moses and, you know, we think about did our life matter? Look, you know, service people who die. They're in the military and they die in service to our country, fighting for their brothers and sisters on the left and the right. And fighting for you for freedom. They never have to wonder if their life mattered. It did. Not just by how they died, but how they lived. But Moshe is looking at all the land. That those people, those stubborn people, those amazing people. God's people. Think about the mission that he gave Moses. Moses didn't realize everything that he'd hoped for. He died looking at the promise from the wrong side of the river. But look at what God said over that death at the mouth of the Lord, buried by God Himself, known face to face. That's the measure, not the list, the face. And last weekend, synagogues around the world celebrated Semakat Torah, Semakat Torah. They read these last verses of Deuteronomy, and without stopping, they rolled back and they read Genesis 1. The end runs straight into the beginning. The last letter of Torah is Lamed. The first is Bet. Put them together, and you get Lev. Heart. Moses' story ended, but God's. God's story didn't. His story in your life didn't end. And Psalm 90 closes with Moses praying it twice. Verse 17. Establish the work of our hands upon us. Yes, establish the work of our hands. What you did for God, even unfinished, He can make stand. So here's your step, and it starts today. Right now. Whether you're listening live or you're listening on playback. Do what Moses did before he climbed, before dark today. Bless one person by name. Bless one person by name, a child, a grandchild, someone you've poured into. Call them or sit across from them and say it out loud. Here's what I see God doing in you. Moshe couldn't take the land, but he could give the blessing. And so can you. Tomorrow, before your feet hit the floor, pray Psalm 90, verse 12. Teach me to number my days. And Sunday at 6:30, I want you to type that person's name in the chat. And when you do that, we're going to pray over every one of them together. Now, watch this. Moshe died outside the land. For more than a thousand years, he stayed on the wrong side of the river. Then in Matatyahu or Matthew 15, I'm sorry, 17, Yeshua takes Peter or Kepha, James, and Yochanan, John up a high mountain, and he's transfigured. His face shines. The way Moses' face once shown coming down from Sinai. In verse three.

SPEAKER_02

Moses.

SPEAKER_01

In the land at last, face to face with the Son of God. Luke 9, verse 31 tells us what they talked about. His departure, which was he was about to accomplish at Yerusalem or Jerusalem. The Greek word is Exodos. Moses and Yeshua talking about the greater Exodus. Echodos than a voice from the cloud. Matthew seventeen, verse five. This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him. Listen to him. Listen to him. Those are Moses' words from Deuteronomy eighteen. The empty doorway at the end of the Torah has someone standing in it. Moses didn't miss the promise. He stood in it with Yeshua. And look at who led Israel across the river. Look at who led them across the river. In Deuteronomy 34, verse 9. Moshe lays his hands on Joshua. And in Hebrew, Joshua is Yahushua. Yeshua, the Lord saves. And Nehemiah 8, verse 17, calls him by the short form of that name. Yeshua, the son of Nun. Moses brought them to the edge. A man named Yeshua brought them home. Watching on another platform. Listen, if however you're listening, come to YouTube. Come to YouTube. That's where this family gathers. The chat is beautiful. Yeah, we get weirdos and nut jobs. So what? We have great people too. The majority are great people. I know. Boom over this. I hate reading this passage, but I love reading it. But then at the end, it puts it puts it all down in real. We get to the real. Look, that's the hope for your unfinished life. First Corinthians 15, verse 58. In the Lord, your labor is not in vain. Doesn't matter what you're doing. But are you doing it unto God? My labor, so much of my labor was in vain. Looks, I had, you know, a very high intellect. I had idetic memory. I never forgot anything. I had athletic talent. I had all those things, and I used them all for the wrong thing. And at this stage of my life, I have very little left to give. Except this. That's it. And to try to love my family, my kids, and my grandchildren as best I can. And to love you the best I can. 1 Corinthians 15, verse 58. Write it down. Put it on a post-it note, put it on the mirror wherever you go. And the Lord your labor is not in vain. The one who rose will raise you, and you will see his face, not the list. Not the list. Not the unfinished things. You'll see his face. The face. So I have for you today a challenge and a choice. So here's the choice. Wanna hear it, I guess. You can measure your life by what you didn't finish. I've been doing that for the last 20 years. Maybe more. What I could have done. Instead of what I can do. What if I die, you know, in service to God? No, I didn't do all I could have done. But I just need to do what I can do. You can measure your life by what you didn't finish, and you can spend your last years grieving the land you won't see. Or you can measure it the way God measures, the way God measured Moses. Did you know God face to face? And trust Him with the rest. The list. The face. Which one will you live today? The list or the face? That's your challenge and that's your choice. Hold on. All week long, well, really for the last two or three weeks. I have been dreading these moments. Because they force me into a place. Trust him. Just do his will. Do his will. It seems so simple. Do his will. Not about me, it's about him. How, God? How will we do it? How will you do it? Trust him with the know him face to face. The more you're in this, the more you're in prayer, real prayer, not this fake crap. Real. You will know him. Face to face. Face to face. Which one is it for you? The list I spent decades on the list. Or the face. Which one for you today? Which one are you living today? I don't know about you. I don't know about you. I don't. But I know I can't possibly be alone. Prayer is not asking for an easy journey. It's asking for Strong back. Father, you've been. You've been our dwelling place in all generations before the mountains were even born. You are God. Teach us to remember our days. And let us bring you a heart of wisdom. Satisfying us. Satisfy us in the morning with your chesed, your steadfast love, so we can rejoice all of our days. For those of us afraid our lives didn't matter, remind us of Moses, Moses. You took his last breath at your own mouth. You buried him with your own hands, and you brought him into the land at last, face to face with your Son and our Redeemer, Yeshua. Establish the work of our hands. Yeah. Yes, sir. Establish the work of our hands, and when we fall, let us fall into the everlasting arms. And in his name, it is the only reason I can approach you. The name of Yeshua Hamashiach, Jesus, the Messiah. Amen. Maybe you've been measuring your life by what you haven't done. And you've never once known God face to face. That's the one thing that finally matters. Look, it's not too late to start today. You don't have to know a bunch of fancy church words. You don't have to have a bunch of fancy alphabets. You just have to want to learn.

SPEAKER_02

You have to believe. And you have to trust him.

SPEAKER_01

It's not too late to start right now. Whenever you're listening, wherever you're listening. You're not here by accident. Pray this with me. Solve this. Handle this. This is your eternity. Pray this with me. Yeshua, I need you. I believe you died and rose from the grave. And I surrender my life to you today. Forgive me. Fill me. Lead me. I'm yours. Amen. If you prayed that prayer today, the most important thing about your life has just changed. I don't care about the stupid people on the internet that make fun of you. And I don't even care about the people that may be at your work or maybe the people you used to run with. And now you you tell them you placed your faith in Christ, and they go, pfft, maybe it's family. But if you just placed your faith in Christ in comments below or in chat, type face to face. Because you're going to see God face to face one day. This whole family will rejoice with you, by the way. Heaven is rejoicing right now. Tell one believer, this weekend, tell one believer, doesn't matter how they respond, just tell them I place my faith in Christ and let them bless you by name.
