Nobody Saw It!

Nobody claps for the ordinary mornings.

You get up, you do the same thing the same quiet things you did yesterday. Don't make a big fanfare about it. Maybe you made lunches. Maybe you cleaned up the kitchen, you know. The night before. You don't like to come home to dirty dishes. Maybe you unloaded the dishwasher, I don't know. Ah, I forgot the clothes in the dryer. Fluff them up. Try to remember to fold them. And all the while you're walking around praying the prayers, nobody else hears. It's a job you show up to. The small faithfulness. It's the small faithfulnesses. You've done them for years. Maybe you're retired now. But you still have a rhythm. Taking care of people. Looking in. You don't really think of yourself as a caretaker, but you really are. And you have your rhythm. You have your stuff. What you say? There's no applause. You think maybe it just doesn't matter? Maybe nobody's noticing. And somewhere in there, a thought starts whispering. Does any of this even count? These big moments matter. The mountaintop mattered, but the 10,000 ordinary Tuesdays in between, the ones nobody wrote a song about? Do those land anywhere at all? There were two lambs offered in Israel every single day. One in the morning, one in the evening. For 40 years in the wilderness, it adds up to nearly 30,000 of them. Now I got a little help to add that up. Not one of them ever got a story or a name or a song, and they were the most important offering in the entire calendar. In the order it happened, to the extent we can. And today we're in numbers 28, 29, and 30. Two chapters that look like something you've already read, and one that changes the subject entirely. I don't know. What is that? I don't know. I don't know. Howdy. I'm not sure what you were asking, but if you first time here, hey look, I'd love for you to subscribe. Kick on the little bell. One honest question before we really go in deep here. One word again, all week long. You only got one word. Do you ever wonder whether the ordinary faithful things you do actually matter? I know. You said, well, that's a lame question. That's a lame question. But if you're being honest with yourself, I mean really, really honest. If you're really being honest with yourself, it's a real question you ask yourself because you say, Man, I do so much around here. And nobody notices, nobody seems to care. Right? And I'm talking just around your house. You know, maybe you have a family, maybe you don't, I don't know. But you think, man, people don't notice the stuff I do. I don't think they care. Maybe, maybe you extrapolate that to God. Maybe you extrapolate that to God. Does God really care? Does God really notice? Yes or no? Do you ever wonder whether the ordinary, faithful things you do actually matter? It's a real question. Love for you to answer it. Yes or no? Just yes or no? Just the true answer. Don't put the fake churchy one. Numbers 28, 1 to 30, 16. Chapters 28 and 29 lay out the whole chapter, the whole calendar of offerings. Daily, weekly, monthly, and then every appointed feast in order with exact amounts of bulls, rams, lambs, flour, oil, and wine for each one. And if that sounds familiar, it should. Leviticus 23. It already gave this calendar. How comes? If you listen, you'll find out why. This gives you the same calendar with the invoice attached. So the question worth asking is why is God going through all of this again? And the answer is tender. The people he's talking to weren't there the first time. Read that in a second. Everyone who stood at Sinai is dead. We just read that census. Not one man left from the first count except Caleb and Joshua. The people receiving these instructions were just toddlers when Leviticus was given. Or they weren't even born yet. So God teaches the whole thing over again, from the beginning in full detail, to a generation that wasn't around to hear it the first time. He didn't assume they inherited it. He didn't assume mom and dad and grandma and grandpa, nanny and papa passed it down. Uncles and aunts or aunts. You know, at their family reunions, they said, hey kids, gather around. We're gonna tell you all this. He didn't assume. Faith doesn't it doesn't travel by proximity. Their parents knew all this, and it didn't automatically land in the children. So God says it again. Patiently, line by line, and he's not bored doing it. Now, look at what anchors the whole calendar. Chapter 28, verse 3. This is the offering by fire that you shall bring to the Lord, two lambs, a year old without blemish, day by day, a regular burnt offering, one in the morning, the other at evening, every single day, forever. The Hebrew here is Olat Tamid. Every feast, every new moon, every Sabbath offering, it's added on top of the daily one. The text keeps saying it. Beside the continual burnt offering, beside the continual burnt offering, beside the continual burnt, the special days never replace the ordinary ones. They stack on top of them. So the mountaintop doesn't excuse you from the morning. The conference doesn't replace the Tuesday. Whatever extraordinary, extraordinary thing God does in your life. It's offered beside the continual, regular, every day. And it's never instead of it. And notice what the two daily lambs do. The morning lamb and the evening lamb bracket the day. Everything in Israelite did happen between two sacrifices. You woke up after one and went to sleep before the next. Which means no ordinary hour of their lives was ever outside their covering. The meal, the argument, the work, the boredom, the failure at three in the afternoon. All of it happened inside a day already open with blood. And closed the same way. They weren't covered at the moments they remembered God. They were covered continually, including the hours they forgot him completely. I always find something cool, something interesting, every time I read the Bible. Every single time. And every time I read through it, I'm always amazed at the new stuff that I see. And it's not new stuff, it's been in there. But the more I read it, the more it just goes pops right out at me. Count the bulls across the seven days of the feast. 13 the first day, 12 the second, and then 11, 10, 9, 8, 7. A descending sequence, and the total is 70. Jewish tradition going back to the Talmud. Tied that 70 to the 70 nations listed in Genesis 10. If you were with us when we read it, we spoke about that. The table of nations after Babel, which you may pronounce that Babel, Israel. And it's the most joyful feast offering on behalf of the entire world. Now, you take that for what you want. Scripture doesn't say it outright, but the arithmetic is there, and if it's the promise to Abraham or Avraham, then in him all the families of the earth would be blessed. Then chapter 30 changes the subject completely. Vows. If a man vows a vow to the Lord or swears an oath to bind himself with a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do everything that comes out of his mouth. Bind himself with a pledge. It's a Hebrew idiom. Remember, Hebrew is a phenomenal idiomatic language. There are about 760 idioms, recognized idioms in Hebrew language, culture, and context. The ancient Near Eastern Hebrew, and many of them exist even today. It's how they say so much with so few words. A spoken vow ties something in you. And in the ancient Near East, that was deadly serious. Oaths were sworn by the gods written in the treaties and carried curses on whoever broke them. But Israel's version has no magic in it. The binding force isn't the formula. It's that you said it. And God heard you, and you're the kind of creature whose word is supposed to mean something. Because you were made in the image of the one whose word always does. The chapter then deals with vows made by a woman inside a household and how a father or husband could confirm or annul them, but only on the day he heard it. Don't carry no grudges, y'all. Pointing to self. That structure isn't ours, and I won't pretend that it is, unless you're Jewish and orthodox. But notice what it does inside itself. By the way, not a bad practice. The window is one day. He can sit on it and revoke it later when it gets inconvenient. And if he does, the guilt lands on him, not her. And a widow's vow or a divorce woman's vow stands entirely. Even inside an ancient household, God is limiting how far one person's authority reaches into another person's word before him. Now, bring the two halves of today together, because they belong together. Chapters 28 and 29 are about God's faithfulness on a schedule. Hamashiach. Thank you, Father, that you care enough to listen to us. Amen. Welcome in. I'd love. Stupid. People are crude. Sometimes it makes you wonder what what people what kind of life they lead. I always do wonder that. What kind of life you lead? Then you want to come to lives and act a fool. I don't know. God's word shows up every morning and every evening without fail. That I do know. Look, can you do the can you do the boring thing? Because we're bringing the two halves of today together because they belong together. Chapters 28 and 29 are about God's faithfulness on a schedule to land every morning and evening, every day without variation. For generations, man, that will wear on you. And yet God is faithful. Chapter 30 is about whether our words are worth anything. I'll say it again: God's word shows up every morning and every evening without fail. The real question of this book is whether ours does. And we live in a moment where words are cheap in the way the ancient world would have found bewildering. And by the way, to that person, the idiot that we just prayed for, know this when when prayer is predicated upon a lie told by you, you bring upon yourself a curse. I wouldn't want on me. That's on you. You gotta ask forgiveness for that. That's a you and God thing. I don't have anything to do with it. So we live in a moment where words are cheap in a way that the ancient world would have found bewildering. We say we'll pray for somebody and we don't. We commit to things at a distance, and then we quietly back out when we think nobody notices. We make promises to our kids, we assume they'll forget, by the way, they don't forget. Chapter 30 says the vow binds your soul, not because God is hunting for a technicality to catch you on, but because a person whose word means nothing eventually becomes someone who cannot be trusted with anything, including themselves. And here's the answer to the whisper you woke up with. The most important offering in Israel was the one nobody noticed. Two lambs, morning and evening, 30,000 of them across 40 years. And not one of those got a song. The ordinary faithful thing isn't the runner up to the big dramatic moment. God's economy, it's the main event. It's the everyday. It's reading your Bible every single day. Not making it a footnote on your day, making it the focal point of your day. Here's the thing. Your unwatched Friday or Tuesday or Wednesday counts more than you think. So here's your one thing today. You can do it before dark, or you can do it before the sun comes up again if it's dark right now. Look back over the last month. You'll remember. I don't remember yesterday, but you'll remember. Look back over the last month and find one word you gave that you quietly just let it expire. You gave your word. Not the big vow. I'm not asking you to look for the big vow. I'm asking you to look for the ordinary little one that you thought was so insignificant that you let it come and go. It's the visit you promised. It's the call you said you would make. And kind of in the back of your mind you hoped that they would forget. Just pick one. Pick one. Maybe it's, hey, I'm gonna go get a little notebook. I'm just gonna get a little notebook. Maybe you're gonna make it a nice notebook, a you know, fancy leather-bound one. You're gonna start a journal of your of your experience with the Lord. You're gonna keep it handy when you're reading his word every day, and you're gonna keep it handy when you're praying, and you're gonna keep it handy when somebody says, Hey, uh, listen, would you be willing to pray for me? Yeah, because that's also a vow. If you somebody says, hey, would you be willing to pray for me? Or you say, hey, I'll pray for you. I'll pray for you. Even on social media, that stupid little prayers up, stupid. Prayers don't go up, they go everywhere. They go to God's ears. If you pray them sincerely, they're just babble if you don't. Pick one. Keep it today. Make the call.

It seems so easy. Make that call you said you were gonna make. You've been saying it. Hey, let me call you back. That's a vow. And then you never do. You say I'm gonna text you. This and that. And then you never do. You say, hey, I'll be there. And then they you never show. Your word finds your soul.

And the way you make your yes mean yes again is one kept promise at a time. Start with one kept promise.

Today. I want you to notice. I want you to notice this. I'm not going to loosen this up at all.

Yeshua. Notice this. Do not swear at all, he says. Let your yes be yes and your no be no. He's saying you shouldn't need an oath in the first place. The whole elaborate vowel structure exists because ordinary speech had become unreliable. Make your ordinary speech reliable, and you won't need the scaffolding. And then he carries the he carries the whole thing himself. The Apostle Paul or Shaol writes that all the promises of God find their yes in him.

Every promise God ever made lands as yes in Yeshua. Every He is the one whose word never once failed to arrive.

Thirty thousand continual lambs across forty years in the wilderness, morning and evening. And then one morning, a man points at a carpenter from Nazareth and says, There he is. The Ulat Tamid finally had a face. I didn't see your question, Robbie, so that's why I didn't answer it. That sucker spins so fast. All right, here it is. What's the symbolic for a burnt offering? Is that like a barbecue? I don't know. What is symbolic about the burnt? That's just how they made their sacrifices. Um, but they ate the food. Uh some ate, as we talked about uh several weeks ago, and last week, um some had uh some had they were eaten by the priests and some were eaten by the people. Just depend. There's a whole structure to it. Yeshua, he fulfilled it all. The Ola Tamid finally had a face. The offering that covered every ordinary hour turned out to be a person, a human being, and yet God. Atana, pray for you. Literally. You can't fix your record of broken words, by the way. Yeshua, Jesus, never broke a single promise. He kept it perfectly on our behalf, by the way, we look at people and we hold them to a standard that we don't want to hold ourselves to. So-and-so broke their promise. That's it. I'm done with them. And yet we've broken promise after promise after promise, and somehow we elevate ourselves. We venerate ourselves as though we deserve it, but we don't. Yeshua kept his word perfectly on our behalf because we can. I have for you this morning a challenge and a choice. Two things before we pray. First, what did you say you were going to do? Not the big vows, the ordinary ones you let expire because nobody followed up. Nobody did.

Well, they didn't follow up. It must not have been important. What did you say you were going to do?

That's those ordinary things that you you just hope they forgot. Or maybe you made the vow and you never intended to do it in the first place, you say. Come on, everybody does that. Then everybody's wrong. Your word binds your soul. That's not moralism. That's not legalism. It's what the text says a promise does inside a person. It's what scripture says. You either believe it or you don't. You don't believe the fluffy stuff and then the stuff that puts an onus on us. Well, I it's negotiable. No, it's not. And second is, and I'm gonna say, There's something worth repeating to somebody who wasn't there the first time. Is there? Is there something worth repeating to somebody who wasn't there the first time? Remember. The Lord repeated it all. Because the people who heard it in Leviticus, well, they're all gone except for two. God taught the whole calendar again to a generation that missed it. And he didn't resent the repetition. There's a young person in your life right now who has no idea what you actually believe. There there is a young person in your life. You don't have any idea. No idea at all. You just assume they picked up on it. Well, I mean, they're around me. They've seen me pray. They've heard me pray. They've seen my Bible, surely. Say it again. Say what you believe and why. Tell them. We're gonna pray in a second. We're gonna ignore all the attempts to, you know, that for for whatever reason. I I don't know why people do this. I really don't. I don't know why they do it. Boredom? I don't know. I I don't I don't know why they live in a in a way and they they find for for whatever reason they find some sort of enjoyment out of coming to live.

They look for them. And then they'll have their thing that they do. And they'll do it. Some of those people are professed, they're professing Christians.

They're in some sort of movement.

Or they just want to try to try to make God look silly or vengeful or unfair. I would not want to be. Let's pray. Hi, Miss Nicole. Good to see you.

You're always right on time. Don't worry about it. We're glad to see you listen to it on playback. Everyone's glad to see you. We're gonna pray. Prayer is not asking for an easy journey, it's it's asking for a strong back. Father, thank you for the continual offering.

For morning and evening, day after day, year after year. With nothing dramatic wrapped around it. Nothing dramatic about any of it.

Thank you that you don't despise the ordinary and that the great days were always offered beside the daily and never instead of it.

I thank you that you were totally and completely totally and completely reliable. And the great days and the daily, but never instead of it. Thank you that you taught the whole thing again to people who had missed it. Patiently, line by line, without any frustration. Thank you that you have the patience to re repeat things for us.

I ask that you give us the same patience with the ones coming up behind us. The people watching us in our faith. The orthopraxis of our faith, how we practice our faith. Forgive us for our cheap words, the word we just didn't keep.

For promises we made and we let expire, unkept, for saying we would do something and didn't.

We hope nobody would remember. Father, forgive us. Make our yes mean yes. Help us to make our yes mean yes, bind our souls to what we said, to what we promised. In the name of Yeshua, Amen. Your agenda is to destroy, not to lift up. I would ask you something. How many people have you led to the foot of the cross? How many have you personally engaged with and said, Let me let me show you how to come to Christ, how to place your faith in Christ.

I want to be with you.

Every step of the way, how many people have you discipled? None. I bet you've argued with a lot of people. I bet you've been ugly with a lot of people. You're probably an intelligent person, and that intelligence is a gift from God, but you've misused it. Hey, I'm not throwing stones, I've misused all the gifts that God gave me.

But you continue misusing them. And all you're doing is destroying.

Because what you're doing is you're trying to pick your cherry-picking areas of scripture, and you're assuming, by the way, you're assuming you don't know what I wear, you don't know what I eat. You don't know the orthopraxis of my life. You don't know anything about that.

But what you do know is your life is empty. It's empty.

I don't know what you're gonna do about it. I don't know. I don't know how your life is right now. Seems kind of empty.

And I don't know where your life's gonna end up, but I'll tell you this: humility is coming to visit you. And humility resonates.

You will never forget it. Trust me on that. You will never forget it. And Gabby, if you could reframe your question so that I can understand it. I'm having a difficult time understanding what you're asking me, but I want to answer your question. I'm going to this, I'm going to that. Or you made a promise to somebody else. Hey, listen, I get through this, I'm gonna do this different, I'm gonna do that different.

Once the crisis passed, he said, I'm good.

I'm all good. Here's what I want you to hear when you hear this. There is one whose word has never failed a single time.

Every promise God has made is yes in him. You cannot fix your record, and you don't have to. He kept it perfectly on your behalf, and he offers it to you now, exactly as you are. Come just as you are. Pray this with me, and mean it. Yeshua, I need you. Please forgive me of my sins. I believe you died and rose from the grave. I surrender my life to you today. I ask that in addition to forgiving me, you fill me with your Holy Spirit. Lead me in my life. My life is yours. In Yeshua's name.
