MAKE IT RIGHT!

There's a person out there. You know who you are. We know who we are. But there's a person out there who is still owed something by us. Maybe it's money. Maybe it's an apology you never rehearsed. Or maybe you did. Maybe you were in the car and you have, all right, yeah, I'm going to give that apology. Why not? So you're in the car and you're rehearsing it. And you never delivered it. Maybe it's the truth. Maybe it's the truth about something that you let them keep believing a wrong thing. Because the truth would have cost you something.

You handled it the quiet way. I mean you told God you were sorry. You felt the weight lift. And you moved on.

But that person is still holding, they're still standing there holding the loss, and some part of you knows the account was never actually settled. Just closed on your end. In this episode, God says something. A lot of religions have tiptoed around for 2,000 years. Being forgiven and making it right are two entirely different things.

And he expects both.

And by he I mean God. You can't sacrifice your way around the person you wronged. This is true word, faith for life with Dr. Sean. I'm Dr. Sean. But today we meet its neighbor, and it's a completely different animal. This one is about damage.

So, yeah. So the pain, it was a huge surgery that they did, and a lot of pain. So we we want to be in prayer for her and uh just praying everything's okay.

So before we open the text, one question for the chat. And I'm just gonna say it.

A name came to mind just now when when when when I spoke the open. And and and I was talking about how somebody yesterday we knew. We knew we wronged the person. Or we you know, we didn't know. Yesterday was the opposite as the neighbor of we didn't know. You didn't know. And and we we talked about what scripture says to do, and we were kind of clear about it. And I gave the story, a true story, of someone from high school that that I offended, and I didn't know. I didn't know till decades later, and I felt horrible. This is a little different. This is a little bit different. But when I was describing that, you know, in the car, all right, I'm gonna apologize, you rehearse it, you know, all this stuff, you psych yourself up, and then you never deliver the apology. The thing you never made right, you know, you allowed someone to believe something wasn't true. And there you have it. They keep believing the untrue thing because you never told them the truth. Because you said, Oh, that's gonna kind of hurt me. There'll be blowback on me. That name that came to mind. One person, I'm not asking you to apologize to the world, I'm not asking you to make it right for the world, I'm asking you that one person that came to your mind. You still owe something. You have to know that Israel lived in a world where wrong done to a person was never just between two people. It rippled out to the family, the clan, the whole covenant community, and it touched God. Because, you know, remember, everything, everything was connected to God. The social fabric then was vastly different than the social fabric now. God touched God who held the whole social fabric together. We've stripped God away from our schools from really every public venue. It's tragic, and I hate it. But I don't want to force people to be Christians. You don't have to be a Christian. If you don't want, you make the choice. And you know, thank you for joining Khalim. Listen, in this world, as a matter of just living and breathing and functioning in this world. Good morning, Miss Tammy. Israel had nothing to do with our schools. If you're an anti-Semite and anti-Israel, Timothy, this is the wrong place for you, brother. Wrong place for you. But listen, I I want I want to be sure that you are connected. Understanding that as we live and breathe, we we sometimes find a way to hurt someone or offend someone. Sometimes we do it because we're selfish. It's plain and simple. We're selfish. We want what we want, how we want it. Appreciate that, Kaleem. Uh this is we are followers of the way here, and uh we are not Muslims, but you're welcome to listen. So none of us are immune to this. You may say, no, no, no, I'm very careful. I'm very careful how I deal with people. I've always been careful. I don't care how careful you are, sometimes you shatter a glass. You think you had, you think you had you were holding on to it tightly, and it just slips out of your hands. Some people say, look, I'm not into all that talk about feelings, and you know, look, if I hurt somebody's feelings, well, then they should toughen up. If I hurt someone, they should toughen up. Ah, well, you know, yeah, I let them believe that lie, but it's not really hurting them. Why dig up stuff? Because it'll hurt you. Because that person may change their opinion of you, or a whole community may change an opinion of you. There was a time where God was central, and community was tightly knit around acknowledging, worshiping, and serving God. That's just that's just how it was. I would to God that it was still that way, but it's not. It's tragic. The whole social fabric today. We've kicked God out of the public square. That name, I want you to think about that name. I I just you don't have to tell me, you don't have to tell anybody. Just type yes. That name, that person, you knew, you knew. You know, I I said yesterday I was thinking of a person that I had offended, didn't know it. But today, I know who it is. And I know I did. And I hate that I did. And I've done everything I can, everything I can think of.

Everything. To make my apologies sincere.

And still that person noop. Hard no. I'm not having anything to do with you. I don't blame them. Oh, you're buying all that Robert Maxwell crap. Yeah, you saw it on Candace Owens. Good lord. But I suspect that's not the case. In the ancient Near Eastern Israeli society. Everything was connected. You wronged someone? The community. They looked hard at you. The whole community. They relied on each other for everything. Not just the leaders, not just the leaders, new, everyone, even down to the children, generally speaking. They lived close. And by close, I mean proximity and heart-wise. By the way, we need to be praying for the people of Colombia. My daughter-in-law's family lives there. Um, they felt the earthquake in Bogota, but uh Pirera and Cali, whew. And the aftershocks are still coming, so 7.54 or 5. It was horrible. Good evening, Terry, Catherine. See, I told you, some people listen and it's nighttime. We have a lady who who uh I don't see Miss Nicole there on the thing, it's scrolling kind of quick, but um we have people that listen right before they go to bed, and we have people that listen from California, uh and the you know the West Coast in general, that it's it's 4 a.m., you know. So I appreciate it all. Listen, I I don't know. You should know that I appreciate it. Australia, the land down under. Wow, that's awesome. At Terry underscore Catherine is listening from Australia. God bless you. I don't know how you found the show, I just know I'm ecstatic about it. Australia is one of my favorite countries in the world. I spent a fair bit of time there on protection assignments, and um wow, it's a what a fascinating place. Fascinating. So today's offering has a name that captures exactly that. The Hebrew is Asham, spelled Elif Shin Mem. And underneath the world, underneath the word sits the idea of liability, of debt, of owing. Asham. Yesterday's offering, the khatat, dealt with your standing before the holy God. This one deals with something you you can count this. Real, specific damage that a real person suffered because of what you did, because of what I did. There's a second word I think worth catching here, where the older King James says a person commits a trespass, the ESV says a breach of faith, the NASB says acts unfaithfully. But the Hebrew, Ma'al, lands closer to treachery. Wow, that's cool. Oh, I am indeed a follower of the way. So that's a big difference, isn't it? You know, King James says a person commits a trespass. Sounds minor. The ESV, and I'm not throwing shade at any of these, they just didn't know. The ESV says breach of faith, and the NASB says acts unfaithfully. Wow, there's a wild range there. But the Hebrew word, ma'al, treachery. It's not a slip, it's it's a betrayal. So when you damage a person, you didn't just make a mistake, you broke faith with them, and as you're about to see, with God. It starts in chapter 5, verse 15. If someone acts unfaithfully in the holy things of the Lord, in something set apart to God, here's what's required. Then there's verse 16. He took, you ready? He restores what he took and he adds a fifth to it. Fifth to it. He restores what he took and adds a fifth to it. Restitution plus twenty percent. Come on now. Come on. When we when we hurt someone, sometimes we go to them and and begrudgingly and and we say, uh, you know, you should be a little softer. You should be a little, you're too soft, actually. You're too soft. You toughen up, thicken skin. Skin's too thin. Okay, yeah, all right, yeah, I did this. So whatever. Or, hey, I'm sorry. Right? Scripture says add a fifth to it, add 20%. You owe someone, give them that what you owe, plus 20% restitution. You give back what you owe, then you give back more than you took. Chapter 6 takes that idea and does something with it that should stop you cold in your tracks. Verse 2. If someone sins and acts unfaithfully against the Lord, then comes the list of what that looks like. Lying to a neighbor about something entrusted to them, robbery, extortion, finding what someone lost and claiming you never saw it, swearing falsely about any of it. Read it again. Every item on that list is something you do to a person, and God calls all of it a breach of faith against him. Come on, what do you mean, Lord? This is you just say it's up against a person, but now you're saying it's against you. God, God calls it a breach of faith against him when you hurt his people. Do you see what that does? It tears down the wall we love to keep between our spiritual life and our dealings with people. You know, our real life. Our real life. We say, well, church is one thing. If you even know where your Bible is.

You know, the Bible, uh, yeah. I mean, uh, I mean it's hard to read, but whatever.

And it's dusty somewhere. Dry rotted. And we say, you know, separation of church and state, you know, it's in the constitution. Well, A, it's not in the Constitution. Anywhere, separation of church, nowhere in the Constitution. The Danbury, the letter from the Danbury Baptists to Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson, and then from Thomas Jefferson back to the Danbury Baptists, because they were concerned, hey, you're going to force the religion of England. You look, we came here to get away from that. You're going to force that on us in this new country? And he said, No. I do huge teachings. Huge teachings on that. They're all free. The footnotes are in and the bibliography are in the Turabian style. That's the style I like. So the whole of my academic work was in that. So I said, well, it's easy to use. It's easy to. So if you ever doubt anything I say, you say, Well, let's go there. We're so into creating this illusion that there is to be a separate way of living. A separate way of living. Look, I go to church and I do my thing, and yeah, I love God worship, especially when the worship music is good and they play a song I like. And the preacher preaches something I think is interesting for a while, but that's only so long. You know. But then Monday comes. Maybe it's not even Monday. You go out to dinner with your family after church. And you're rude to the hostess, and you're rude to the wait staff. And you know, we all do this, and we don't think it's any big deal. But if you've ever waited on people, if you've ever been a waiter or waitress, server, that's what they call it now. Um, and and you sit down, and it's a busy restaurant and a busy time, and you sit down and you jabber instead of looking at your menu, understand every second on a busy, busy day that a table isn't turned, whoever's waiting on you is losing money. And all the way down the line, all the people that they split their tips with, which you better, if you claim to be a believer, if you claim to be a Christian or a follower of the way, you had you had better tip well. But if you stand, if you sit there and you jabber back and forth, and a waiter or waitress comes up, and five minutes later they say, Oh, you, you know, do you need a minute? Do you have any questions? You know, blah, blah, blah. And then look, if if the if the menu is so huge it looks like an encyclopedia, you can't get to all that stuff in two minutes. All right. So, so you you say, Hey, can you give us five minutes? But take those five minutes to study the menu. And then when that person comes back, good morning, Miss Colleen, when that person comes back to to take your order, be ready. You say, Well, that's stupid. Well, I'm paying to go out there if you knew how little they make, to take the crap from people that claim to be Christians. Good morning, good morning, daughter of the king. Look, you may say that's Pickyune, I get it, but that person that's waiting on you, that person who's waiting on you, you don't know what they're trying to accomplish with the money they make and what fails to get accomplished if they don't. Small thing, you may think. But that that woman or man is, or that girl or boy might be trying to put their kid through college. They may be trying to put themselves through college. Or just affording to live. I'm just saying. Would it kill you? The first five minutes, sit down, read the menu. Make your choice, be kind to the server. If they don't tell you their name, ask. And then here's a suggestion. You do what you want with it. I don't, you know, it didn't affect me. But when they when they bring your food to say, hey, we're fixing to pray for our food, pray over our food. Is there anything we can pray for for you? And no. Uh hey, Terry Catherine nailed, nailed it. Nailed it. I'm putting this up on the screen. Dad gummit. There we go. They may be just trying to put food in their children's mouths. Children's father may be gone. Maybe it's a guy, and he's trying to do it. I got a great buddy of mine, has four kids, me too. Robbie says I hand my tip directly to the person who serves. Me too. I do that too. And I thank them. Look, I I got a buddy of mine. Wife was a drug addict, horrible person, four beautiful kids. He he pursued and got custody, and he's raised them for two decades, and he is amazing. Grant. Miss Colling knows him. He's the best shooter I've ever seen in my life, too. Both hands. Crazy. A good dude. Does it with no complaint? And before he got hurt, he was going to work, two jobs, working all kinds of hours. Put food on the table. Put clothes on their back. Let me tell you something. You don't know what people are going through. If you're a believer, if you're a follower of the way, if you're a Catholic, if you're whatever religion, and you're not kind to the people who you're dealing with, I don't care what level they're at. Especially the lower ones, the ones not lower in the sense of, but you know what I'm saying. Like, you know, there's the president of the company, and then there's the secretary or the receptionist or the director of first impressions, and you be kind to them. Not as a tactic, as being human. Why? Because God, just like an ancient Near East, Israel, He you do wrong to them, you do wrong to me. Doesn't cost a penny to be kind. Dragonfly Three Wings. Nailed it. Doesn't cost a penny to be kind. Why can't you be kind? You say, Well, I'm a curmudgeon. I'm cranky. You know, I have high standards. Hey, you know what? Me too. That doesn't stop you from being kind to someone. Look them in the eye. Look them in the eye. And when you say, hey, is there anything I can pray for for you? Listen to them. Listen to them. Miss Colleen can tell you, Miss Colleen, you you let them know if this is true or not true. I've said that to people when we've been somewhere, and I've said, whether her name is Catherine or Leah or Bob or Cindy or whatever. And I've said, hey, listen, we're fixing to pray for our food. And I wonder, is there anything that I can pray for for you? Out you go. Loser. People, I don't understand. It's just it's the fallen world, man. The demons are out. If you're not if you're not seeing the live chat. Anyway. Miss Colleen can can validate this. There have been times where I have said that. We're fixing to pray over our food, and I'm wondering, is there anything I could pray for for you? We have had servers burst into tears. And scramble to try to, you know, not lose it. And and I've had one uh or a hundred say, are you serious? Are you serious? Yeah, I'm serious. We've had them sit down. Because their knees were buckling a little bit, and they told us their story real quick. And some of the stories are horrific. And they're just trying to feed their family. While carrying the weight of the world, they're waiting on you and trying to smile. Would it kill you to smile and be kind to them? No. And the thing is, it's not optional. What's being illustrated here is how you treat, you know, God's people. We're all God's people. How you treat them matters. You think it doesn't matter? Oh, this isn't church, this is in church, it doesn't matter. Oh, look at me. I'm at 30 minutes. I gotta hurry up. What am I doing? Susan would say, I'm chasing rabbits. All right, I'm coming back into the backyard and closing the gate. Listen, do you do you see what it does? When we're unloving or unkind to people we interact with, it tears down the wall we love to keep between our spiritual life and our dealings with people. God sees it all. It all matters. Look, we'd like to believe there's some religious zone over here where God is involved. Or over here. We'll put them. Religious zone. And then there's an ordinary zone over there where it's look, it's just business, it's just family, it's just how I handled that deal. God says no. When you cheat your neighbor, hey, I'll break it down. You barred a lawnmower. You hit something, you knew it damaged the blade. He gave you a lawnmower full of gas. You gave him back a lawnmower dirty and empty of gas and a bent blade. 30 bucks. 30 bucks at Lowe's. Go get you a new blade and buy him an extra one. You say, well, I only broke one. And add 20%. Add 20% to what you did. He was kind enough to lend it to you. Make sure that gas is full to the top in that mower. Make sure it's clean. Listen, when you cheat your neighbor, you didn't commit some small horizontal offense. You broke faith with God. That person carries God's image. That trust was something God made possible. You can't wrong a person without wronging God. Are you listening? Is anybody hearing this? Now watch what he requires. And watch the order because the order is the whole point. Verse 4 and 5. He restores what he took, adds the fifth, and gives it to the person it belongs to. Then verse 6: He brings his offering to the priest. Poof. The restitution comes first, or at the very least, right alongside. You don't get to hand God a sacrifice to some substitute for paying back the person you cheated. The restitution isn't what bides your forgiveness. The offering does that. The blood does that. You're never paying God back. You couldn't. But real repentance has feet. It has hands. It finds the person, writes the check, makes the call, then mows the person. Nobody writes checks anymore. It says the humiliating sentence out loud listen, I thought I was right about this, but I was dead wrong. And I was I was incredibly ignorant to you in front of your family, in front of your coworkers, in front of your boss, in front of your subordinates, in front of your neighbor, whatever. And I was wrong. I was dead wrong. You go to those neighbors, those coworkers, that CEO, the whoever and whoever was around, whoever, and you say, look, you make a public apology. I was wrong there. And I humiliated them. And you humiliate yourself by saying the sentence out loud. Look, for forgiveness is free. It costs you nothing. Repentance is free too. And it costs you everything that you took, plus some. Notice the fifth part one. One more time. I know it sounds like I'm I'm repeating this, but I'm not. I am, but you'll understand why. 20% on top means that when it's all settled, the one who did wrong ends up poorer than if he'd ever done it. I'm sorry, if he'd never done it. And the one who was wronged ends up better off than before it happened. God's justice doesn't just level the scale, it tips it toward the victim. And look at that list once more. Now listen, I'm gonna say this real quick. I'm interjecting, I'm so far over. Listen, I was in law enforcement for years, different, different levels, and you know, all that. But I remember when when I was in law enforcement, we we had about our constituency, it was about 750,000 people that we served. And I remember being just so exasperated that victims got the shaft every time. Everybody forgot about the victims. The family, they didn't forget. The family of the victim, they didn't forget. The courts, they don't really care anymore. Amen, Sean. We gotta live like we know God's right there with us all day because he is. Amen. Look. Nobody likes to see a whole bunch of wrong about themselves. Nobody does. But there's there's a there's the perpetually aggrieved, you know, they're constantly looking for, you know, the racists and the, you know, it's oh, it's it's because of race, oh, it's because of my gender, oh, it's because of my, you didn't recognize my gender I made up, and all of these things. It's because of this. Everything is they got the shaft. They lived their whole life that way. But then there's actual victims, right? Victims of horrible crimes, victims of car crashes they had no part in. It's changed their life forever. Not in a minor way. Their families went broke, living off of food that they had saved up over the years, and nobody knew it. Praying to God that they could keep their house. Praying to God that they could keep clothes on the back of their kids. There's real victims out there. Look. Okay, look at look at the list once more. Look at the list once more. These aren't accidents, this isn't drift. You don't accidentally find a wallet and deny it. Maybe the wallet had a lot of money in it. The other day I asked a question. I said, what would you do if you found a suitcase full of money? Nobody around. The bills don't look marked, just a suitcase full of money. What do you do? You look around, look around, look around, put it in your car, put it in the boot or the trunk of your car, scurry on home, run inside real quick, lay that money out on the kitchen table, and holy moly, that's that's a million bucks. There's nothing in it to indicate anybody's identity at all. What do you do? These are chosen sins, done with open eyes, and God provides an offering for them anyway. That's mercy reaching further than yesterday's. Yesterday he covered the wandering you never noticed. Today he opens a road back for the person who knew exactly what they were doing. They did it and they came to his senses. If you've been carrying something you did on purpose, certain that there's no way back from a sin you chose, this chapter was written for you. There is a road, it runs through confession and through the person you hurt, and it ends at the altar. Then the chapter turns. And God speaks to the priest, and there's one line to take home. Verse 9: the burnt offering stays on the altar through the night. Verse 12, the priest lays fresh wood on it every morning. Verse 13, the sentence itself. The fire shall be kept burning on the altar continually, it shall never go out. The Hebrew here is Tamid. Tamid, continually, always. Here's what makes it beautiful. In a few days we'll read where that fire came from. And it didn't come from a match. It didn't come from a lighter. It didn't come from a flint. It came out from before the Lord. God kindled in himself. So the priest's job was never to start the fire. God started it. The priest's job was to keep it from going out. And how? Two things, both painfully ordinary. Verses 10 and 11. First thing every morning, he lifts out yesterday's ashes, changes his clothes, and carries them outside the camp to a clean place. Then verse 12. He lays fresh wood on the fire. That's the whole job. Carry out yesterday's ashes. Lay on today's wood every morning for the rest of his life. I don't know a better picture of the ordinary life of faith than that altar. You didn't start this fire. God did. But you can absolutely let it go out through neglect, one skipped morning at a time, carrying out the ashes, is you dealing with yesterday, the failure, and the leftover mess, taking it outside the camp instead of letting it pile up on the altar. And laying on the wood. I gotta tell you. The obedience. The plane fuel nobody applauds. The flame keeps burning because somebody kept showing up in the morning. That's the shape of both halves of today. Repentance is something you do once with a specific person, but tending the fire is something you do every morning for the rest of your life. So here's your step today. And it has a name attached, because that's the point. Think of the one person the chat question surfaced. One person. Today, today, make one concrete move towards setting it right. If it's money, name the amount, set the date you'll pay it. If it's an apology, write the actual sentence you've been avoiding and send it before you sleep. By the way, on that money you owed, add 20% to it. It's not me, it's God. If it's a truth that you've hidden, decide how you'll tell it. And to whom this week. Not some vague someday. A move you can point to by tonight, then tomorrow morning, before anything else, carry out the ashes and lay on the wood. You say, I can't sleep with peace. I don't have any peace. Might be one reason why. One honest step toward the person and one ordinary morning at the altar. Both halves of today land on Yeshua. Turn to Isaiah 53 if you have your Bible with you. The great chapter is an amazing chapter about the suffering servant. Verse 10 says, The Lord makes his soul an offering for sin, and the Hebrew word Isaiah reaches for here, right there in that spot is Ashem. Asham, the guilt offering. The guilt offering, the trespass offering, this exact offering. The one for damages owed. The prophet looked ahead at the Messiah and said, He will be the Hashem. In Isaiah, he will be the asham. Speaking of the Messiah, Yeshua Hamashiach. He will be the Ham. He will be the payment for the damage. Come on, somebody. Man, that's gotta sit with somebody. He will be the Ham. Our redeemer. He paid more for our sins. Look, we can never repay that. There's a line in the Psalms that I love. I can't read without my throat catching or crying a little bit. Because it's this whole chapter with a face on it. Psalm 69. A Psalm in the New Testament keeps applying to Yeshua, says. Right? The New Testament keep referring to it. Psalms were written long before. This is a psalm the New Testament keeps applying to Yeshua. And it says, I restored what I did not steal. Hear that. I restored what I did not steal. He paid back a debt he never ran up. He made restitution for goods he never took, for trust he never broke, for people he never cheated. He walked up to the counter of the universe and paid with interest for damage that was entirely ours. He didn't pay the principal only either. Think about what you actually walk away with. Not just a clean slate, back to zero. You get more than you lost. Righteousness you never had, adoption you never earned, an inheritance that was never yours. God's justice always tips the scale past even. In the gospel, it tips in your favor at his expense. This is why, when Yeshua walked into Zacchaeus' house, the first words out of that man's mouth weren't a doctrine. They were, if I've cheated anybody, I'll pay them back four times over, fourfold. He blew right past the fifth part. And Yeshua said, Today salvation has come to this house. The restitution didn't buy the salvation. The salvation produced the restitution. That's always the order. I have for you today a challenge and a choice. So here's your choice this morning. You can keep the account closed on your end and hope the other person forgets they're still holding the loss. Or you can let the gospel put feet on your repentance, walk up to that name and make it right, knowing the one who restored what he never took has already covered you. One road keeps a quiet dead humming under your whole life. The other is clean. Go make it right. Prayer is not asking for an easy journey, it's asking for a strong back. Heavenly Father, thank you that you don't treat sin as a private religious matter when people go on carrying the damage that we did to them. Father, I thank you that you take our neighbors seriously enough to call harm against them a breach of faith with you. Give us the honesty to name what we owe and the courage to go make it right, even when it costs us, Father. Even when it humbles us. Thank you that the paying back was never what saved us. Yeshua did that. Our Hashem, who restored what he never took and paid it with interest for damage that was ours, help us to carry out the ashes and lay on the wood and keep the fire you lit from going out in the heavenly name of the Yeshua Hamashiach.
