Drifted THIS Far?

You didn't quit on God. There was no dramatic night. No moment when you decided you were done. I'm finished. I'm done. There was no big declaration. You didn't say, hey, that's it. I'm out. I'm out with this faith business. I'm out with this following business. I don't even see what it's getting me. I'm out. I'm just done. No. There's no fanfare. There's no big deal. You just were. There was no moment when you decided you were done. You just got busy. The kids, the job, the bills, the house, a thousand small fires. You just got busy. Then one ordinary morning, maybe today, maybe it was yesterday, got a lot of notes from yesterday's episode. If you didn't see it, I'm praying you'll watch it. Or listen, it's on Spotify. Look, you didn't, you know how we make these big declarations, right? We say, it's some big burst of manifesto. We blurt it out, we tell everybody. This wasn't that. This wasn't the waves crashing upon the rocks, crashing upon the shore. This wasn't an epiphany moment. It's just one ordinary morning. Both the coming in and the going out of the faith and then the coming back in. It was. It just hit you. You it hit you that you couldn't remember the last time you actually heard from God. You felt the Holy Spirit, the Ruaka Kodesh. Adhana Eloim. It was just outside of any of you just could, you just couldn't, you couldn't remember. You say, man, I don't remember. And I'm not even talking about reading about him. I'm talking about hearing him. And you didn't walk away either. You drifted. And the drifting doesn't feel like leaving. It feels like a full life. And see, in that there is a trap. The most dangerous season for your soul, it usually isn't the hard one. The hard season, it's the good season, the full fridge, the answered prayer. Pain keeps you reaching for God. God whispers to us in our pleasures, and he shouts to us in our pain. Comfort lets you set him down without noticing. More than 3,000 years ago, a man stood before a nation about to get everything it had prayed for. He didn't warn them about their enemies, he warned them about their own forgetting. Then he handed them the cure. One sentence. If you're in the United States, we uh we have a, I guess, somewhere around a thousand listeners. We have 4,000 and something subscribers, but we have uh we have I think yesterday was around a thousand, and then the day before was just maybe it was two thousand, I don't know. Listening to this. But a little bit of struggle makes us strong. We wish it wouldn't. We like the easy way. But in that easy way, good lands. We lose ourselves and we lose our faith. The drift, they knew about the drift, they knew what what uh how weakness will creep in. Freedom, liberty. People that didn't have to fight for it, they disrespect it. They cast it away. It's exactly what happened. He said, you know, it's a republic if you can keep it. It's that same way with our faith. I bet you can't guess how old I was. I said it on air anyway. Anyway, I felt very special yesterday. Y'all made me feel very special. The two of you were absolutely amazing. You blew my mind. Um my uh son and daughter-in-law gave me beautiful, beautiful, this beautiful quill pen and this beautiful special journal. It's the one my son uses, and I think my daughter-in-law uses it. And she has a pen too, she has her very own. Um, anyway. And it even with my messed up hand, it writes beautifully. All that said to say this, that um Miss Colleen, she gave me, thank you, Robbie, thank you so good. Thank you, Colleen. So she, so speaking of thanking Miss Colleen, she she gave me, she, well, she gave me this thing, this meat thermometer thing. Our meat thermometer broke, and that's how we cook, because I forget, so I have to have alarms. Anyway, and as expensive as meat is, you know, you don't want to you don't want to waste it. Not just meat, you can do anything with it. It's called a meter. They're not a um they're not a subscriber, but it has an app and all that, so it's pretty cool. Anyway. I felt very special, but last night Miss Colleen she snuck off to the food line uh on her way home from work, and she got some supplies, and I love brownies a little bit crispy. You know that. Anyway, she made me brownies, and she got me my favorite ice cream. My ice cream. It was good lord, it was amazing. Blue, what is it? Blue, what is it? Blue, something rather. Uh, it's from Texas, it's made in Texas, and it was um mint chocolate chip. Good lands. There gotta be 35 pounds of chocolate in that ice cream. It was so good. And then she did whipped cream and I love the maraschino cherries. She put one on top, it was really nice. Because Miss Linda uh Kahalan, she mentioned about uh ice cream cake, because she knows I love ice cream cake, but this one's pretty darn good. I said, Oh, Deuteronomy. He goes, Deuteronomy. You would expect day 123, I would be, but I don't want to teach that way. I want you to have depth. So, through the Bible in a year, walking the story of God, we're in Deuteronomy 4, 5, and 6 today. Chapter 6 holds the sentence Faithful Jewish families have prayed morning and night for thousands of years. So here's where we are. And it's kind of fascinating. I love um it really um, I don't know, it moves me a little bit what these people went through this week. Thank you, Nicole. Israel's camped on the plains of Moab, east of the Jordan. The promised land is across the river. And Moses, who he's not going to get to cross with them. Remember that. He doesn't get to go in. Whoa, Robbie says, December, man, he remembers exactly December 15th, 2024. It was intense.

Wow.

It must have been, you remember it. So Moshe, or Moses, he's not going to cross with them. But he's still, he's still shepherding them. He's still blessing them. He's not going to partake. He's preaching the last sermons of his life. Oh man, if that doesn't hit you, this man. This man, what he's going through for these people, for God. It gets me, man. It gets me. He keeps circling one word. Remember. Remember. And its shadow do not forget. Deuteronomy four nine. Only take care and keep your soul. Diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen. When we hear forget, we think of lost car keys, but Hebrews doesn't. To remember is zakar. Zakar means to act on something, to keep it alive in how you live. Your orthopraxis, how you live your faith, how you live your life. In the Hebraic mindset, in the Hebraic worldview, there is no two. And and this is that there should be no, well, this is my spiritual life, and this is my how I live my life. No, no, no. There should be no, there should be no divider. There's no end. It is both of them together, musht. Zakkar. To act on something, to keep it alive in how you live. When Genesis 8:1 says God remembered, remembered Noah or Noah, he didn't recall a fact. He moved and the waters went down. To forget shakak, shakchak means letting something slip out of your living until it no longer shapes you. Israel would never ever lose the facts of Exodus. Echodos. Echotos out of. Moshe or Moses feared they'd stop letting these facts matter. We say all the time, why do the Jews, why do they, the observant ones anyway, or the faithful ones, why do they always do all these feasts all the time? Seem like all the time doing this special thing and these special observances, Yom Kippur and Sukkot and Pasak and all, all, all, all, so many. All beautiful, all there for a reason. Why do they do it? Because they wanted their people to remember. Remember and live it. And Moses, he feared they'd stop letting these things matter. Because when they went into the promised land, maybe things would get a whole lot easier in an easier life. In an easier life we forget. Oh, how quickly we forget. We forget how we got there. And listen to what he says when the danger peaks. Deuteronomy 6, 10 through 12. Are you ready? God will bring you to great cities you did not build, houses of good things you did not fill, wells you did not dig. And when you eat and are full, then take care lest you forget the Lord. Come on. Not in the desert, not in the wilderness, not in the lack, not in the where we're going to eat, Moses. I'm on my last can of progressive soup. Not a sponsor. I'm afraid you're going to forget the Lord when you come into this abundance. Deuteronomy is shaped like the treaties great great kings made with the smaller nations in the ancient Near East, where all of this was happening. Those treaties had a word for a subject's loyalty to the king. The word was love. So when Israel hears love the Lord, they don't hear a warm feeling. Oh, I love. Come on, give me a hug. Come on over here and give me, let me hug you neck. No, they don't think that. They hear allegiance. The Hebrew people, the Israelites, the people of the book, the people of the land, they hear allegiance. Now, a detail in chapter five, most people miss, and that's okay. Everybody misses them. Moses repeats the Ten Commandments, but the Sabbath gets a new reason. Let me say it again. Moses repeats the Ten Commandments, but the Sabbath gets a new reason. In Exodus 20, 11, the reason is creation. Right? God rested. Here in Deuteronomy 5.15, it's this. You might have missed it, and that's okay. A lot of people do. I'm just a weirdo. Deuteronomy, like Captain Obvious, right? Deuteronomy 5.15, it's this. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt. The Sabbath becomes a weekly appointment with remembering. I talked yesterday about who carried you? Do we do we even remember those times? Who carried us through? We couldn't carry ourselves, we couldn't couldn't half walk. Are you listening? Click the thumbs up while you're thinking of it. It's not too far. God built the cure for forgetting right into the Isra right into the Israel's calendar. I have a I have an iPhone, right? And on the iPhone, I don't know about other phones, but uh on this iPhone I have multiple calendars, but one of the calendars I have is the Hebrew calendar, right? Because it's it's really the calendar. Um and and all of the holidays and observances and and feasts and high holy days, all that, I have that on there. And I say a special prayer for my for my Jewish friends, but also for observant. Uh, I have lots of friends who are observant. They're not Jewish, but they're observant. They observe all the high holy days. God didn't never, never, never, he never removed that for us. Just because we're, you know, we're grafted in doesn't mean we're exempt from it. Anyway, whole nother teaching. So the Sabbath becomes a weekly appointment with remembering. That's what this composition that you're hearing behind you now, that's what this is about. Remembering. God built the cure for forgetting right into the calendar. Can you imagine this? Then chapter six, verse four, Moses drops the sentence, Uy. Shema Israel, Adonai Aloino, Adonaichat. Let's start with the first word, Shema. Spelled Shin Mem. We translate it here, and that's true, but it's very thin here. Translating it here is very thin. Biblical Hebrew doesn't have a separate everyday word for obey. Shema does both jobs. Some of you have heard it pronounced Shema or Shema, but it's Shema. When a Hebrew mother says Shema to her son, she's not asking whether the sound reached his ears. She's asking what he's gonna do about it. Shema Yisrael Adonai Elenu, Adonai. What are you gonna do about it? She's asking what he's gonna do about it because you listen in this ancient Near Eastern Hebrew culture, the Hebrew worldview, the phenomenality of the language of Hebrew, she's asking, what are you gonna do about it? Because you listen with your feet. Now, the translation tension that matters most today, and I I don't like bringing it up because you know that's a whole separate deal. And but but the fact of the matter of it is, sometimes I gotta, sometimes I have to, because it there's because you won't get the full, I don't know, weight of it, beauty of it, intensity, I don't know, whatever the words. The ESV, English Standard Version, one of my one of the versions I use, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Jewish Publication Society reads, the Lord is our God, the Lord alone. The complete Jewish study Bible keeps the Hebrew Adonaio, and and and I I love it. You know that, I'm a weirdo. Adonai Chad. One or alone. The Hebrew holds both. It's a phenomenal language, it can do many things with some of really the fewest of words. One means God is not, he's not divided. Take a breath on that one. Alone means nobody else sits on his throne. Come on. Are you getting it? Doesn't mean what you've been taught all this time. Doesn't mean that. It means so much more. For a drifting heart alone, that's the word that stings. It stings. Drift almost never looks like bowing to another God. Never never looks like some big declaration of I'm done with this faith. It looks like ten good things quietly sharing the throne, the kids, the grandkids, the job, the spouse, the screen. None of them are evil. All of them are crowding out of God. Then verse five. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. Love. Ahav. Hebrew word, ahav. That's a treaty word. Allegiance. The whole self turned in one direction. And might. Miod. That's normally the little word for very. Love him with all your variness. Everything you have. Everything you got, everything in here, everything in your head, everything in your heart. Everything you have, and everything you are. So how do you keep a full? Look, our we're forgetful. We're forgetful. I prayed this morning, right before the broadcast. Of course, I pray for you guys all the time, but I always pray for you. I have a reminder that that pops up, and I pray for you before the broadcast. So it comes on, and then I pray and then uh put my phone on, do not disturb. And and then, but generally speaking, I'll look at all the tools that I use because I have a brain injury. I would never be able to do this without a lot, a lot of help. So there's a lot of programs that I buy, there's a lot of subscriptions, there's a lot of different things, and there's a big screen here, and all the stuff is over here. And then I got a screen I'm looking at that has a camera behind it. I'm looking at you. But I prayed. I said, thank you, God, for all of these things. The lights and the backdrop and all that. By the way, what do you think of the backdrop? Different thing, not as distracting. I'm distracting enough as it is. Come on, somebody. Anywho. I prayed and I thanked God for all the tools, the microphone, right? The ear things that I can hear myself a little bit. I'm hearing impaired. So uh I can hear enough of myself where I think I'm saying the words correctly, trying to. Um, I hear the music a little bit, but I look at the number for volume. And my buddy, for whom I wrote this composition, uh, he always busts my chops about the music's too loud. Anyway, so I try to remember the number. I have all these tools and I thank God for them. So how do you keep a full, and let's be honest, forgetful heart tethered to one God? Real question. It's a real question for real people. Whatever age you are, wherever you're living, whatever country you're in right now, it's the same. It applies. How do you keep a full, forgetful heart tethered to one God? Deuteronomy 6, 6, and 7. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them, you shall teach them diligently to your children. Teach them diligently is one Hebrew word. From shannon to sharpen the way you wet a blade. Sharpen these words and sharpen these words in by repetition. When you sit at home, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, when you rise. Then verses eight and nine, bind them on your hand, set them between your eyes, write them on the doorposts of your house. Listen, Jewish and observant, I want them for my home. Jewish and observant home still fix a small case called a mezuzah to the doorframe. My friends have me, there's a little bit of an angle on them. They never put them straight up and down, a little bit of an angle. There's a reason for everything. And this mezuza is this little tiny case, right? Looks like a mini scroll. They fix it to the doorframe with these words rolled up inside. And they touch it to remind them. They touch it. And they're coming in and in their going out. I have some friends who have them on every doorpost in their home. I get to the final home that I'm gonna live in before I pass. If I get there before I pass, and I want them on my doorpost too. They touch it to the remind. The remind-listen, we I I know lots of you are living a very hard life. I I know it. I know your some of you reach out to me and we talk, and and and I know your story. And it's hard. And I wish it wasn't for you. But at the same time, I hear you talk about how God is ever-present and and you see him in that struggle, in those chemo treatments, in the radiation treatments, in the surgery recovery, in the in the recovering from heartache. In the learning to smile instead of be a grouch. In the watching your mother pass slowly from this world to the presence of God. Some of you have you watch your children go, and your spouses, and your best friends. I said to Miss Colleen yesterday, and and the kids, I said, I said goodbye, I think this past month, to so many friends and colleagues. It's been a little bit rocking, a little bit shocking. Anyway. And you're coming in and you're going out. What do you remember? Look, this touching this and and you know, remembering the Shema, you it's not some mystical technique, it's rhythm. Small physical repeated collisions with the truth, right? Some have asked, why do I wear this? Right? Uh it's an emergency thing, it has all my emergency contacts, drugs. Don't give me this drug or you'll kill me. If you find me unconscious, paramedic. But then it has, I don't know, you can probably see it. It's beautiful, handmade. Alchai Israel on it to remind me in Hebrew. And and I have Rosary from my dear friend, Dr. Amy, my favorite endocrinologist in the world. And uh she was my doctor, and I said, first appointment, I said, we're gonna be friends, you and me. And now our families are friends. Well, she works in a place where she interacts with these very, very elderly nuns. And this one that's left um makes these beautiful, beautiful. They make these shawls, and she gave me a shawl, which is beautiful, and it's green. I don't know if you know, my last name is greener, and my favorite color is green, yes. But also, this beautiful, beautiful um this rosary is it's green, beautiful, handmade. She makes them. Anyway, I wear it sometimes in the house, it has a beautiful cross on it, and I wear it because it's not, it's not a Catholic, it's it's it's a Catholic people think of it as a Catholic thing, not that there's anything wrong with that, but it was a a Christian thing before it was a Catholic thing. And it's to remind you, each one, and that they're split into decades, right? And it's what they call them decades. And I do a whole teaching on it on True Word, Faith for Life with Dr. Sean. You can go through and search, and it's in there. Anyway, and you touch them and you remember, and there's certain prayers that you pray, and then certain people that you pray, but you're not, you're not relegated to just that prayer. You're relegated to um praying for who you want to pray for. There's different sections that remind you, hey, pray for this, remember this, remember, remember, remember. Small, physical, repeated, you wouldn't we're not worshiping this thing. It's just small, physical, repeated collisions with truth. And it's built into your ordinary day. So the truth gets sharpened back in before it can drift out. So here's the here's the bridge. Bridge to home, and it's close to home. We're close here. You've been treating your drift like a feelings problem. If you could just work up more passion, you'd reconnect. So you wait to feel something. You keep not feeling it, so the distance grows. I'm gonna I'm gonna preach on Sunday at Virginia Creek Campground. We start promptly at 9 30. So Virginia Creek Ministries is is an actual church inside the campground. Part of friendship is remembering. Right? I had a bunch of friends remember my birthday yesterday. I don't know how they do it. I don't remember my own birthday. I have a brain injury, so I don't remember. And you know what happens when you don't remember people, when you don't reach out to people, when you don't send that little text? When you don't send a little, hey, I'm thinking about you. It means the world. That little video from my grandson, the calls from my son and daughter-in-law. My son and I chatting on his way home from work, his long drive home, about theology. Deep, powerful questions. Robbie uh says, I live too far away. I wish I could go. Well, let me say this. Um, it is Joe. If you're still listening, could you post the website that you post them on or the or the YouTube channel? Uh, because Joe is so amazing. He films them and all that. You can't capture everything, but he does a phenomenal job. Anyway, that'll at least you'll be able to see it. I don't think live, I don't think they live stream, but after he'll process it and all that. Anyway, Moses never prescribes a feeling. You notice that? He never prescribes a feeling. Listen, wait till you feel this. You should and modern worship services, like the postmodern Western evangelical experience, that that is all designed. They're taught in their seminaries. My seminary did not teach this, but um uh intentionally so. Uh the thing is, Ms. Nicole says it would be fantastic if they could post it. They'll they'll post it. They'll post it. Joe is amazing on that. I don't know how he does it. I don't know how he does half the stuff he does. Anyway, it is important, in my estimation, it is important to not focus so much on feelings, right? Friendship. I'm gonna talk on Sunday about friendship. We can't talk, we can't, listen, it can't, it can't be so much about feelings. It can't be. Feelings lie. Sometimes we misunderstand the feeling because we misunderstood the words or the action or the lack of action, the lack of remembrance. People you value, you pick up the phone. People you value, you visit, people you value you call, you text, you send the email, people of value you send the card. But Moses never prescribes a feeling. He prescribes a rhythm when you sit, when you walk, when you lie down, when you rise, on your hand, on your door. None of that takes a spiritual mood. It's not a mood. He fills the ordinary day with small reminders on purpose. Because a full life, a full life just crowds God out unless you intentionally build him back in. There was a book written, it was the number one selling, I think it still is the number one selling non-Bible book called The Purpose-Driven Life. It was out many, many years ago. And it just was a sensation. I mean, it just, it's still, you know, there's purpose-driven church, purpose-driven life, and I'm sure there's purpose-driven everything. The fact of the matter of it is, and I don't agree with all the theology, but that's okay. You know, purpose-driven, your purpose in living your life, our purpose is to bring glory to God, to worship him, to remember him, to testify about him and Yeshua, Hamashiach, to converse with him. Reminders on purpose. This is what Moshe or Moses did. He built them in. Why? Because a full life, busy life, it won't just crowd out your friends, right? The friends you forget. What he's saying here is the blessing isn't the enemy. The forgetting is. Your job isn't the problem. Your kids aren't the problem. Letting them sit on the throne of God is. Your problem was never that you stopped believing, it's that you stopped rehearsing. The small daily acts of remembering fell away, and the current did the rest. The current only runs one way. Nobody drifts toward God, they drift away. And it happens almost imperceptibly. You're quite welcome, Miss Tammy. So here's your step. It's small on purpose because small and daily beats big and never every time. Now we have a friend listening from South Africa. But our new friend, it's, you know, it's it's one, almost two, there in the afternoon. So time is a ticking, but it's morning in a lot of places. In some places that are listening, it's early morning, some it's evening, and you're laying there in bed trying to unwind from a very busy, busy overnight in the emergency department trauma center. Keeping people alive. Listen, do this before dark today. Or if it's in the middle of the night where you are, do it before sunrise. Take a card or a sticky note and write one sentence on it. Come on, you can do this. The Lord is my God. The Lord is one. Maybe you think of this in your own words. You alone, Lord, nothing else gets the throne. Put it on the door frame that you walk through the most. That's Deuteronomy 6 9, taken literally. And every time you pass it, say the sentence The Lord is my God, the Lord is one. Or you alone, Lord, nothing else gets the throne. Put it on that doorway. And every time you pass it, say it out loud. And tomorrow, say it again. Don't build a program, build one doorpost. That's how forgetful, that's how, that's how forgetful heart gets sharpened back to attention. In Mark 12, 28 through 30, a scribe asks Yeshua, which commandment is the greatest? And our dear Savior said this. Our Redeemer said, The most important is, Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one, and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all of your strength. Yeshua took the sentence, Israel praised morning and night and called it the greatest commandment of all. Then he did what none of us could. Every other human heart has been divided, but his never was. He loved the Father with everything he had, all the way to a cross. He's the one who kept Shema completely. God knew Israel couldn't hold this willpower. So in Deuteronomy 36, he made a promise. And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. The command of chapter 6 becomes the gift of chapter 30 through Yeshua. And by the Ruakakodesh, the Holy Spirit, the promise comes home. You don't climb back from the drift away from God by generating enough passion. No, no, no. We always do it backwards. We always do it wrong. Oh, I'm just trying to get that feeling. I feel the presence of the Lord in the house tonight. No, no, no. No, no. Sometimes the deepest presence of the Lord is not one. Listen, and I love that feeling. I love beautiful worship music that brings you into the presence. There are some singers and musicians that, man, when I hear them, I say, oof, that that brings me right there. And I'm able to see and perceive and understand. And connect. No, but it's not a feeling. It's not passion. You don't climb back from drifting away with passion or feelings. You come to the one who never drifted and he anchors you. He is never moved. He heard the Father perfectly so that a drifting heart could be brought home. Come on, I have for you today a challenge and a choice. So here's the choice in front of you today. You can keep waiting to feel close to God again and keep drifting while you wait. Or you can stop waiting on a feeling and hang one doorpost before dark. Come on, you can do that. Feelings follow rhythm far more often than rhythm follows feelings. If I could just get motivated, I would do something. No, no, no. Action brings motivation, not the other way around. Faithful Jews have never waited until they felt like, felt like saying Shema. They say it morning and they say it at night. And it keeps them. Start your rhythm today. Let your heart catch up. My friends, prayer isn't asking for an easy journey, it's asking for a strong back. Pray with me. Heavenly Father. We didn't mean to drift. We never decided to leave you. We just got full. We got busy with all this stuff. All the distractions, and one day we we couldn't remember the last time we truly heard you. I ask that you forgive us for letting good things share your throne. I ask for your forgiveness, for our treating our distance like a mood or feeling to wait out instead of a rhythm to rebuild. You alone are God. You alone get all of us. Sharpen your words back into our hearts. Meet us at the door frame, at the red light, at the pillow. Write your love on hearts that can't hold it on their own. Thank you for your Son, our Redeemer, our Savior and our Lord. Your obedient Son who heard you perfectly and obeyed. By your Ruaka Kodesh, your Holy Spirit, keep us listening to you in the name of Yeshua, our anchor. Amen. Maybe today you've realized this isn't drift. You were never anchored at all. Well, if that's the case. You need him. Stop running from it. Stop playing games with things of eternal importance. Things that change everything. Again, you can keep messing around, you can keep being childish. Or you can understand. You can embrace the fact that one day your beating heart is going to stop. And you don't know that day or that hour. You need to handle this. You need to handle this. Pray this prayer and mean it. Yeshua. It's just Jesus. I need you. I believe you died for me and you rose from the grave. I surrender my life to you today. I ask that you forgive me of my sins, my hurts, my habits, and my hangups. I ask that you fill me. Lead me. You stopped rehearsing it. And the cure is general. It's gentler than you feared. One sentence, one door frame, one ordinary day at a time. Until the heart that drifted learns to hear again.
