Are YOU a Good Guy?

Are YOU a Good Guy?

Could You Be the Villain and Not Know It?

Confirmation bias political violence are REAL and they are NOW.

WATCH on True Word, Faith for LIFE! with Dr. Shawn

The man who allegedly engraved a slur on a bullet did not believe he was the villain. He believed he was the hero. That should keep every one of us awake.

I spent this week watching a courtroom in Provo, Utah, the way I once watched crime scenes: looking for what the evidence says underneath what everyone wants it to say. For five days, prosecutors presented their case in the assassination of Charlie Kirk while his widow, Erika, sat in the front row between her mother and her mother-in-law, nearly thirty hours of it.[1] And what I kept returning to was not the rifle, or the rooftop, or even the engraved casings the whole country is talking about.[2] It was a question that would not let me go: what does a man have to believe about another human being before he loads contempt into a chamber?

I know the answer, because Scripture gave it to us in the fourth chapter of the Bible. Before there was a nation, before there was a law, before there was a single political party, there was a man convinced that his brother was the problem. And the LORD did not agree with Cain's sorting. He said sin is crouching at your door, and its desire is for you, and you must rule over it. The Hebrew there is stunning: sin is robetz, crouching, the posture of a predator lying in wait.[3] God located the danger inside Cain, not inside Abel. Cain's whole theory of the case was wrong, and the first grave in human history was dug by a man who thought he was correcting an injustice.

Psychologists have a modern name for Cain's error. They call it confirmation bias: the tendency to believe only what confirms the story we have already chosen. Proverbs said it three thousand years earlier and said it better. The one who states his case first seems right, until another comes and examines him. I built this entire episode on published research and courtroom records precisely because of that verse. Feelings flatter us. Evidence examines us.

And the evidence is grim. The Network Contagion Research Institute and Rutgers University warned in April 2025 that an assassination culture was emerging, with majorities of one political wing registering at least some justification for political murder.[4] Charlie Kirk read that report and warned about it publicly. Five months later he was dead.[5] And the follow-up research this January found the numbers moving the wrong direction, on both wings.[6] Both. That is the part I refused to soften, because if I only aim this word leftward, I am committing the very sin I am naming.

Which brings me to the hardest passage I recorded this week. The threats against Erika Kirk and her children, and there are roughly a thousand documented ones, have been fueled not only by ideological enemies but measurably by a conspiracy ecosystem inside the conservative camp itself.[7] Yeshua told His disciples to beware the leaven, and He chose that image deliberately.[8] Se'or, the leavening agent Israel swept from their homes before Passover, does not announce itself.[9] It works silently, invisibly, through the whole lump. A widow is being devoured by tongues, and some of those tongues prayed before dinner last night. The rabbis called it lashon hara, the evil tongue, and taught that it kills three: the one who speaks, the one who listens, and the one spoken of.

So where does the assassin actually come from? Not from nowhere. He is discipled. He is catechized by an ideology, whatever label it wears, that locates evil in a category of people instead of in every human heart. Once evil lives in a category, the solution stops being repentance and starts being removal, and the twentieth century buried a hundred million people in the graves that logic dug.[10] And that same logic keeps circling back to its oldest target: the Anti-Defamation League documented Jewish people murdered on American soil in antisemitic attacks this past year, with physical assaults at the highest level ever recorded.[11] We built museums that say Never Again. Never Again is not a memorial slogan anymore. Never Again is now.

But here is where the searchlight turned on me, and where I pray it turns on you. Genesis declares that every human being is made b'tselem Elohim, in the image of God.[12] The activist I disagree with bears the tselem. The voter I cannot understand bears the tselem. Erika Kirk bears the tselem. And the accused, sitting in that Provo courtroom awaiting a ruling, bears the tselem. The moment I am certain my enemy has no soul is the moment I have lost mine.

So I ended the episode the only place honesty allowed: not pointing at Provo, but praying David's prayer. Search me, O God, and know my heart. Because the machine that builds an assassin starts with a bias that feels exactly like being right, and the only heart I can submit for inspection is my own.

The answer to a divided nation was never a party. It was never a movement. It is a Person: the Jewish Messiah, Yeshua, who prayed for His executioners while they gambled for His clothes, who took every ounce of humanity's contempt into His own body at the tree, and who rose so that Cain's children, all of us, could finally be free of the crouching thing at the door. He is not asking you to clean up first. He is asking you to come.

Baruch haba b'shem Adonai. Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the LORD. And blessed, truly, are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

STUDY GUIDE

Special Episode: "Could You Be the Villain and Not Know It?"

True Word, Faith for LIFE! with Dr. Shawn M. Greener

A Single-Episode Companion Study (Turabian Format)

This guide accompanies one special episode. It follows the episode's five movements in order, with timestamps, so you can study alongside the recording or work through the whole guide in a single sitting. Have your Bible open and the episode within reach.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

Listen to the full episode once without stopping. Then return with this guide and move through the five movements below. Each movement gives you the episode segment it tracks, the Scripture behind it, the core truth, a Hebrew term study, four reflection questions, and a prayer focus. Finish with the Episode Review. Total study time: roughly 60 to 90 minutes, or divide it however your week allows.

MOVEMENT ONE: THE MACHINE AND THE FIRST MURDER

Episode segment: The Mechanism through Charlie Kirk (2:00-8:00)

Passage: Genesis 4:1-16; Proverbs 18:17

Core Truth: The episode describes a four-step machine: sort humanity into boxes, consume only confirming voices, dehumanize the other box, and justify the violence. Genesis 4 shows the machine is not modern. The first murder in history was committed by a man convinced his brother was the problem, and God relocated the danger to Cain's own doorstep.

Hebrew Term Study: robetz (crouching)

When the LORD warns Cain that "sin is crouching at the door" (Genesis 4:7), the participle robetz, from the root rabats, describes an animal lying down or lying in wait.[1] The same root pictures flocks at rest (Genesis 29:2) and a predator settled low before the spring. Sarna notes that the imagery presents sin as a personal, predatory force couching at the doorway of the human heart, yet subject to mastery: "you must rule over it."[2] Scripture's first portrait of sin locates it not in the brother outside but at the speaker's own threshold.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Which of the four steps of the machine have you personally watched happen in your own thinking: sorting, confirming, dehumanizing, or justifying?
  2. Cain's anger was real, but his diagnosis was wrong. Where have you felt genuine anger and aimed it at the wrong door?
  3. Why does God require Cain to rule over sin rather than removing the temptation or removing Abel?
  4. Who is the "Abel" in your world right now, the person your flesh has quietly labeled as the problem?

Prayer Focus: Ask the Father to show you the crouching thing at your own door before you inventory anyone else's doorstep.

MOVEMENT TWO: THE WIDOW AND THE TONGUE

Episode segment: The Old Hat through Erika (8:00-14:00)

Passage: Proverbs 6:16-19; Proverbs 18:13, 17; James 1:26-27

Core Truth: The episode documents a widow and her children receiving death threats while a court moves at a pace an old lawman calls an irregularity. Scripture files the lying tongue on the same hate-list as hands that shed innocent blood, because one feeds the other. Pure religion defends widows in their affliction; it does not theorize about them or monetize them.

Hebrew Term Study: lashon (tongue)

Proverbs 6:17 names lashon shaqer, a tongue of falsehood, among the things the LORD hates. Lashon denotes the tongue as the organ of speech and, by extension, speech itself, for good or devastating ill.[3] Later Jewish moral teaching developed the category lashon hara, the evil tongue: speech that damages another, which the sages said kills three parties, the speaker, the listener, and the one spoken of. Proverbs 18:17 supplies the discipline that starves the evil tongue: the first case sounds right until it is cross-examined.

Reflection Questions:

  1. The episode notes that justice delayed becomes oxygen for conspiracy. How does slowness in institutions tempt you personally toward suspicion and rumor?
  2. When did you last share, repost, or repeat something before verifying it? What was the cost, or what could it have been?
  3. James defines pure religion as visiting widows and orphans in their affliction. What would it look like this week to actively defend someone being slandered?
  4. Whose "first case" have you accepted without ever hearing the cross-examination?

Prayer Focus: Pray Psalm 141:3, asking the LORD to set a guard over your mouth and keep watch over the door of your lips, including your keyboard.

MOVEMENT THREE: THE LEAVEN IN OUR OWN LUMP

Episode segment: The Leaven through The Numbers (14:00-20:00)

Passage: Matthew 16:5-12; Exodus 12:14-20; 1 Corinthians 5:6-8

Core Truth: The episode's hardest turn: measurable threats against a widow driven from inside the conservative camp, and survey data showing justification for political murder rising in both political wings. Yeshua warned insiders, not outsiders, to beware the leaven. No camp is unleavened, including ours.

Hebrew Term Study: se'or (leaven)

Before Passover, Israel was commanded to remove all se'or, the fermenting agent, from their houses (Exodus 12:15). Se'or denotes the leavening starter itself, the small hidden culture that permeates and transforms the entire batch of dough.[4] Its power is precisely its invisibility: a trace amount, kneaded in, works silently until the whole lump is changed. Yeshua and Paul both seize this Passover image for corrupting influence inside the covenant community. Note where the search was conducted: in one's own house, by candlelight, never in the neighbor's kitchen.

Reflection Questions:

  1. The episode reports the both-camps numbers: 67 percent and 54 percent. Which number were you more prepared to believe, and what does that reveal?
  2. Why is it so much more painful to confront corruption inside our own camp than outside it?
  3. Have you ever stayed silent while your own side spread something you suspected was false? What silenced you?
  4. What is one specific piece of leaven, a habit, a source, a grudge, that God is asking you to sweep out this week?

Prayer Focus: Ask the Ruach HaKodesh to conduct the candlelight search of your own house and give you courage to confront leaven among friends, not just enemies.

MOVEMENT FOUR: THE IMAGE AND THE GRAVES

Episode segment: The Ideology through The President (20:00-27:00)

Passage: Genesis 1:26-27; Genesis 9:5-6; Romans 11:17-21

Core Truth: Ideologies that locate evil in a category of people rather than in every human heart dug a hundred million graves in one century, and that logic keeps circling back to its oldest target, the Jewish people. Never Again is a present-tense assignment. Every human being, ally and enemy, President and prisoner, bears the stamp of the King, and to strike the image is to assault the King it represents.

Hebrew Term Study: tselem (image)

Genesis 1:27 declares humanity created b'tselem Elohim, in the image of God. The noun tselem denotes an image, likeness, or representation, the visible statue or stamp representing a sovereign in territory he rules.[5] Sarna observes that ancient Near Eastern kings erected images of themselves in distant provinces to declare their dominion; Genesis democratizes this royal language by applying it to every human being, not merely to monarchs.[6] Genesis 9:6 then grounds the prohibition of murder explicitly in the tselem.

Reflection Questions:

  1. The episode says once evil lives in a category of people, the solution stops being repentance and starts being removal. Where do you hear category-thinking in your own vocabulary?
  2. Romans 11 warns wild branches against arrogance toward the natural branches. What is one concrete way you can stand visibly with the Jewish community this month?
  3. Speak aloud over your hardest person or group: "This person bears the tselem of God." What happens in you as you do it?
  4. If the accused in a Provo courtroom still bears the image of God, what does that require of our speech about him, even while we pursue justice?

Prayer Focus: Thank God for stamping His image on people who oppose you, and pray by name for the Jewish community, seventeen incidents a day.

MOVEMENT FIVE: THE SEARCHED HEART

Episode segment: The Text through Closing (27:00-35:00)

Passage: Psalm 139:23-24; Matthew 5:21-26, 43-48

Core Truth: The episode ends its search not in Provo but in the mirror. Yeshua traces murder past the hands to the heart, to contempt itself. You cannot simultaneously intercede for a man and dehumanize him. The only heart available for inspection is your own, and even that inspection must be outsourced to God, because the inspector is compromised by the very bias under investigation.

Hebrew Term Study: chaqar (search)

David's prayer, "Search me, O God, and know my heart" (Psalm 139:23), uses chaqar, to search out, examine, or explore to the depths, the word used for mining the earth for treasure (Job 28:3) and for a judge investigating a case.[7] David does not volunteer to search himself; he petitions the divine Examiner. The psalm asks God to expose any grievous way within and to lead him in the everlasting way.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Why does David ask God to search him rather than promising to search himself? What does this concede about confirmation bias?
  2. Yeshua says contempt places a man in murder's courtroom (Matthew 5:21-22). Whose name did your mind supply as you read that?
  3. Of the six concrete obediences in the episode (verify, listen across the line, correct your own camp, pray for an enemy by name, defend the widow, stand with the Jewish people), which one costs you the most, and why?
  4. The episode's CAPS line: the moment you are certain your enemy has no soul is the moment you have lost yours. Where are you closest to that line today?

Prayer Focus: Pray Psalm 139:23-24 slowly, word by word, then sit in silence for two minutes and let the Examiner answer.

EPISODE REVIEW

  1. Trace the machine from Genesis 4 to this week's headlines: sorting, confirming, dehumanizing, justifying. At which step does Scripture interrupt the sequence, and how?
  2. How do robetz, lashon, se'or, tselem, and chaqar together form a complete biblical anatomy of how hatred grows and how it is healed?
  3. The research cited in the episode found justification for political violence rising in both political camps. Why is "both" the most biblically necessary word in that sentence?
  4. What is the connection between defending a widow from slander (James 1:27) and preventing the next act of violence?
  5. Answer the episode's title question honestly, in one written sentence: could you be the villain and not know it, and what is your only safeguard?
