Key Takeaways

  • True change does not start with surface-level willpower or sticky notes, but in the heartโ€”the control room where wanting and thinking live.
  • When Moses looked back at the people after 40 years of miracles, he noted that the Lord had not yet given them a heart to understand, pointing to our own inherent inability to change ourselves.
  • God always moves first; the indicative of what God has done always comes before the imperative of what He asks of us.
  • Remembering our past rescueโ€”the Hebrew concept of zakarโ€”acts as a bulwark against closing our fists and losing our generosity toward the vulnerable.
  • Stephen Kaufman's 1979 study demonstrated that Deuteronomy chapters 12 through 25 methodically follow the order of the Ten Commandments as they apply to ordinary daily life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your struggle with change isn't a lack of knowledge or effort, but a deeper issue rooted in the heart, which is why God's grace must intervene where human willpower fails.

What does Moses say about the heart in Deuteronomy?

Near the end of Deuteronomy, Moses points out that despite 40 years of miracles, the people still lacked a heart to understand, highlighting the human need for a divine heart-transformation.

How do the laws in Deuteronomy connect to the Ten Commandments?

Look, you could teach a class on it, couldn't you? Well, you've tried. You've tried. It's not as though you haven't put effort in. You've tried and tried and tried and tried.

unknown

Oh my goodness, you've tried.

SPEAKER_01

The promise you made in the car after the blow-up. The fresh start on the first of the month. Right? First of the month. I'm making a I'm making a I'm doing it right here, right now. I'm doing it. See, Mitchell, I I know I know who you are, but I cannot, for the life of me, remember it at the moment. Thank you for listening. Thank you for your commenting. Thank you, Linda, Susan, Robbie, Sean spelled correctly. Um, Susan, good to see you. Good evening. Good evening to everybody. And listen, if if some of you for whatever reason, I can't see, um, I just want you to know that I appreciate you being here. It's awesome to have you. Well, it's tricky, isn't it? You were you're on your way somewhere, and everybody was hi Tammy, good to see you. And you were, you were, you said, we're running late. Come on. Come on, come on, come on, come on. And then you got frustrated and you blew up in the car. The fresh start after you say, Look, first of the month, I'm gonna, I'm doing it this time. Any of you who have struggled with addiction, you know what that's like. You say, Okay, when I get to here, I'm gonna do it. When this happens, I'm gonna do it. It happens, and then you don't. Sticky, sticky note. You but I'm gonna put that on right on there. I'm gonna put the sticky note. I'm writing and this is three days pass and then a week. Hey, Lynette. Three days pass and then a week, and and and and then you're on a good run. You're on a good run. It goes well. Hi, Charlene. Well, we are so happy to have you. Thank you for joining us. We appreciate it. Listening on YouTube. True Word Faith for Life with Dr. Sean Shaw N. Click on subscribe and like and the little bell for all notifications, even if you're like my dear Lynette, who's listening on Facebook. We're streaming to 13 locations this time. But none of those other locations count to the viewing time or any of that stuff. I know that it's uh strange, it's a strange thing, but if it if just make sure you go to YouTube, uh the true word faithful life with Dr. Sean, SHAWN channels, about 4,000 um subscribers and click on that. Do it, do it there. That's the place to do it. That's what helps us the most. So you know, you're on a good run, and then all of a sudden, all of a sudden, you know, in in the addiction world, we call it relapse. Well, I I had a relapse. I don't know what happened. I I was doing so good, and then all of a sudden, you know, it just and you're right back where you started, and and this time you're a little more ashamed than you were the last time. Seems like every time you're a little bit more ashamed. So a quiet verdict, well, it starts forming underneath everything. Something's wrong with me. Other people can change. Why can't I? I don't change. Why is it so easy for everybody else? But I can't. God must be tired of hearing the same confession. Why would I even do it again? Here's what nobody told you. Your problem isn't that you don't know enough. You know plenty. You know plenty. The problem sits lower than knowledge, it's in the place where wanting lives. Now look, we we all know people. We all know people who maybe, maybe if you're not a person who is in addiction and you haven't dealt with it personally, maybe you know somebody. Maybe somebody you love. And this isn't only about addiction, in fact, it's very little about addiction, but those same things, right? Go through those same things all week, this past week, all week we sat with Moses on the the plains of Moab. Wasn't that cool? Man, did we ever learn a lot? By the way, tremendous resource. This this week, I spent about three weeks working on the blog and study guide. And the study guide now is it it will you it will function uh and it's designed that you could use it for your small group or your Sunday school or you know, any of that. So just so you know, that is uh it is designed that way on purpose, and uh it's free, it's a free thing, and I can't imagine why you wouldn't use this true wordfaithforlife.com, true word faithforlife.com under blog up toward the right, anyway. So all week we we sat with Moses or Moshe on the plains of Moab while he poured out God's instructions. Man, did he ever give it all he got? Amazing, rewritten stones. Remember that? We're gonna talk a little bit about that. Open hands, do you remember that? A king under the word, a basket of first fruits? Beautiful commands, every single one of them is beautiful. Then, near the end of the book, Moses looks at the people he's led for 40 years and he says something that should stop every one of us cold. To this day, the Lord hasn't given you a heart to understand. Hello, Miss Carolyn. Good to see you. I can't make out what that one above is through I don't know what it is. It's a gamer, and it's a weird handle, and I don't know what it's about. It's in Latin. So I know what it means. Anywho, welcome to everybody. Man, can you imagine this is what Moses looks at these people that he's led for 40 years, good lands. Rough stuff, inarguable that he has worked through some really, really tough things. To this day, the Lord hasn't given you a heart to understand. 40 years of miracles. 40 years of miracles. Manna every morning, water out of a rock.

SPEAKER_00

What in the world?

SPEAKER_01

Can you imagine the stuff they experienced? And they still didn't have the heart. They didn't still have that heart they needed. But Moshe or Moses didn't end there. Tonight we open up what God promised to do about it and why your failure to fix yourself is the exact place Grace has been waiting. This is true word, faith for life with Dr. Sean, S-H-A-W-N, and we are ecstatic to have you. Hopefully, you intended to be here because, well, this is where you are. I don't think you ended up here by accident. In either case, even if you did end up here, but oh, I clicked on that wrong thing, and then something interested you. I hope you'll consider listening for a little while. We're very kind to one another here. We are very kind and decent to one another. In the live chat, that's how we operate. And if you don't, well, you don't last long. If you have an agenda or you start posting links, um, well, out you go. So, welcome to the Sunday summation and deepening of Through the Bible in a year, we're walking the story of God. Well, tonight, wow, we gather a whole week in Deuteronomy, chapters 10 through 26. Yeah, it took us a little bit, didn't it? It was tricky. Chapters 10 through 26. And, you know, today is about what, you know, really what we can't do in a weekday. We're a little bit limited on time. At least I'm supposed to be 30 minutes, 20 minutes. I don't know. I don't know what the marketing says anymore. But I do know this. It's you get your money's worth here. So, Deuteronomy chapters 10 through 26. And uh we'll we'll open tonight, we'll open or today, or whenever you're listening. We'll open the hidden architecture under the entire law code. We'll stand over a clay tablet pulled out of a temple floor in 2009, and we'll follow one Hebrew verb. By the way, if you want to hear more about that, see more detail about that, go to truewordfaithforlife.com. True wordfaithforlife.com. That's my website and under blog. And then if you scroll down to study guide, it's expansive this time. I was over my word limit by 3,000 words, as you might imagine. And there's no cost there. The only thing that there's any cost for is my book, True Word FaithforLife. And um, that's up in the store, and you by no means have to buy it. It's available anywhere books are sold, but we do better when you buy it direct from the website. Anyway, I encourage you to use the blog and the study guide. Um, it's powerful. There's a full bibliography, there's annotated footnotes, um, questions and and uh the whole deal. I mean, it's elaborate. So, and you might be able to tell that I kind of like doing stuff like that. Takes me a lot longer than it used to. I have to take breaks and rest my eyes and rest my brain, but hey, I give everything I have. Miss Colling can tell you uh we preserve all of my energy and all of my brain uh usefulness for this right here. By the way, thank you to Jacqueline, our sweet and wonderful neighbor. I absolutely adore you and your family, and thank you for uh my birthday chicken casserole and the muffins. Yum. That was sweet. So, and I'm gonna find out just how sweet um after this is over. So, yeah, if you send to me Russian, you'll know. I could smell them too. They smell delicious. Anyway, if you're new tonight, you're in the right place. You don't um oh, I started to say, uh what was um the floor, the thing in the in the floor, temple floor in 2009. This was found. I talk about that in the in the blog and the study guide. Um and what else we're gonna do tonight also is we're gonna follow one Hebrew verb from a command to a promise. And I know that sounds very geeky, but when you see it, when you hear it, when you experience it, you're gonna go, hmm, int. So you're in the right place. You don't need to know your way around a Bible to belong here. My book, True Word Faith for Life, was written for the person ready for God's word to make sense in real life. It's um it is available at true wordfaithforlife.com. So settle in. This is the deep end. And by the way, thank you to everybody being so sweet and so kind and so thoughtful. I also want to let you know that last week's average live viewer number was over 1,500. Our high was 2,969. Um, and so that's exciting. Tell your friends, share it with people. That's why clicking on the subscribe, like, um, the little thumbs up, and that's like, and then uh, and then clicking on the little bell, why that makes such a big, big difference. And not for nothing, thank you for all the amazing comments that you guys put there. That is phenomenal. Teamwork makes it a dream work. So here's where the story traveled. Right? I'm gonna I'm gonna bush haul through this part and then we'll come back through and elaborate. Monday at the foot of a broken covenant, God told Moses to cut. By the way, how's the sound? I forgot to ask. Moses, he God told Moses to cut two more, right? He he was so mad at the people, you know what they do. He's up there toiling away for 40 and 40. And uh he he comes down, they've melted down their gold that they were fortunate to get when they were leaving Egypt. And uh here they've melted down. They want something to worship, they want something to see and touch. And they were like, Well, maybe Moses is never gonna come down. Uh, by the way, they would have never called him Moses. That wasn't his name. His real name, his Hebrew name is Moshe. Uh, thank you, Robbie. Thank you so much. So he got mad, and I don't blame him. Thank you, Miss Carolyn. I don't blame him. So he threw him down. Now God wrote them with his finger. Might want to hold on to those. Might be worth something. Thank you, Miss Tammy. Might be worth something on eBay. You know what I mean? You could advertise it that way. God himself, his own finger. I don't think they had eBay back then. Amazon only delivered. They only did four-day delivery back in the ancient Near East. They didn't, I'm just kidding. It was five days. Anyway, these are the same words. He said, Come on, we're gonna do this. Second set of stones and the broken pieces, they went into the ark right beside the new ones. Now, Tuesday, that was a lot for a Monday, right? Tuesday, Moshe or Moses turned their faces away from Egypt, where you water your field with your own foot, toward a land that drinks the rain from heaven under God's eyes, from the first day of the year to the last. Can you imagine? Oh man, we talk about a very special word that's very, very different. Extremely different, right? Um, and so we'll get into that in a little bit. So Wednesday, uh as as I guess you have surmised, Wednesday, we got up to a bunch of stuff too. We were very busy, um, very, very busy. And it was it was just delightful. Wednesday was just delightful. Um we we had a massive, massive um response in the live. This is the largest we've had, except for some special episodes that we've done. So I appreciate all of you for doing that. And then everybody that shares this, shares the links, God bless you, share them. Um, you never know when that share is going to change somebody's life or save somebody's life. I get notes from people all the time, where they were, where they are in their life. And so uh there have been many that I've received that said, hey, somebody sent me this. And I have to tell you, it was at the just right time, right? So Wednesday, the open hand, where we talked about chapter and verse. Believe me, I'm going to get to all the chapters and verses, Robbie. Um, and if you go to truewordfaithfullife.com, um, you especially might like uh the blog and study guide for this particular episode or this particular week. I went all out, went nuts. So clenched fist, we talked about that, and then we talked about the open hand. Every seventh year, debts released and servants sent out the door with their arms full because God had done exactly that for Israel in Egypt. Wow, what a day, right? Thursday, Moshe or Moses climbed to the top of the power ladder and he put the king under the word, copying God's law by hand so his heart wouldn't rise above his brothers. And then Friday, oh, what a day we had on Friday. He brought it down to a farmer with a basket and a confession. My father was a perishing Araman, broken, watched over, released, humbled, grateful, a covenant restored, and a whole way of life built on top of it. On the weekdays, we walked into one morning at a time. And that's what we're going to do tomorrow, if the Lord Terries, if I wake up, one of my Facebook friends went to sleep um Friday night. His wife was next to him. They kissed each other goodnight. We're looking forward to Saturday, and he's uh he's uh a little close to a year younger than me. And um, she woke up and got his coffee, and he hadn't come out for the coffee. She's good land, you're staying in that bed. And um he had passed in the middle of the night. No sign of pain or strain or struggle, isn't that the way we all want to go? But it was way sooner, and he was way younger. Well, that can happen to me, it can happen to you, it can happen to anybody. He didn't have any ongoing health problems. He had served in the military and in specialized units, and he was an exceptionally fit man, liked to lift weights, the whole deal. You never know. Take every second seriously. Something sacred hangs in the balance of every moment, as Heschel said. So on the weekdays we walked into it one morning at a time, and now we steck, we step back far enough to see the shape of the whole thing. And once you see that shape, you're never gonna read these chapters the same way again. Never. Never. There's five threads. I like to I like to make it simple for you all. So there's five threads, and by the way, in the blog and the study guide, I elaborate on elaborate on these and I make them very clear. So it will be easy to follow, but I go way deep in the study. Gotta go way deep. Um, it could be used in a in a uh and it's free. All of it is free. The only thing I ask, the only thing I ask is just if you copy it, I made it copyable, copyable, and pastable. If you do, make sure you copy all of it, which includes the copyrights. Everything I do is copyrighted, everything I say and everything I write, all the songs and poems and stories and plays and all of these. So, first, the five threads that ran under all five mornings. We're gonna move through them quickly because the deep water lies past them. And believe you me, we're gonna get into some deep water. Thread number one, God moves first. He rewrote the stones before Israel changed a single thing. He watched the land before they planted a seed. He redeemed them before he asked for an open hand. Scholars call it the indicative before the imperative. What God has always done always comes before what God asks. Why? So that you know and understand we can trust God fully and completely. By the way, I apologize. I have the mic turned way up. I'm talking barely above a whisper. Um, for whatever reason, I have worn my voice out. So hopefully you can hear me and understand me. So thread number two, right? Remember, there's five threads. Remember Zakhar, remember he's saying that word zakar? Remember you were a slave in Egypt in chapter 15, verse 15, chapter 16, verse 12, and chapter 24, verses 18 and 22. In Hebrew, remembering calls the past into the present. So it changes what you do next. By the way, if you're freaking out, you're like, oh man, I can't write all these numbers down. Oh, I don't have my pen. Um, Miss Colleen, when I changed my shirt, I left my pen, I think, the special, special pen. I either left it where my breathing machine is, beside the table, uh next to the bed, or it's still attached to my shirt that I took off, which I hope not because I would be devastated. That was a gift from my son and daughter-in-law. And um, if you wouldn't mind checking that. Anyway, thank you, Robbie. I appreciate that. Let me know, by the way. I'll panic, I'll worry over it the whole episode. I'm sentimental that way, and I love the thing. It's beautiful, pen. Anyway, he gave me this beautiful, they gave me this beautiful book, too. Super sweet, super, super sweet. Anyway, verses if don't freak out. If you're missing the verse numbers, you say, wow, he said that so fast. We got so much to get through. This is a massive episode. And so all you have to do is go to true wordfaithforlife.com if you missed anything under the blog and study God. It is easy as pie, super easy to navigate. And um yeah, yeah. And I hope that I hope that uh you like it. I hope that it benefits you. You know, why not? Why not? Well, in Hebrew, we're gonna talk more about this in greater detail. But remembering, boy, yeah, I you know, you ever, it's like a you ever smell something, it smells so good, the fragrance, right? Fragrance, well, that smells so good. Oh, maybe somebody wears a certain fragrance for years, for many, many years, I wore a fragrance. Um I'm not gonna say the name because he's not a very good guy, but um his cologne was absolutely fantastic. And and I have to tell you, that was my signature. Everyone knew me when I would walk by, because I wear cologne every day. Um, when I walked by, they knew they knew this is showing, and they liked it and got compliments all the time. This coming can validate and verify. And some of you have walked by me, and you're like, ooh, hey, I like it. Anyway, go on, stop making it for whatever reason. But the point is, is sometimes you remember, and lots of things cause you to remember. And it's crazy, but it's true. Sometimes uh the scientists say that the olfactory sense, which is your sense of smell, fragrance. Something unforgettable, and bad fragrances and good fragrances, but we like the good. Right? Sometimes the fragrance, I remember when I was in basic training down in Florida in July. Yeah, I know, stupid. And um, I have to tell you, you know, there was a certain smell uh associated with when the sprinkler systems were on. I'd never smelled that. And I said, wow, that's a neat smell. It's usually at night. Then you know you had to march everywhere, even if you're by yourself. And uh a couple of times I brought myself to a halt and I just went, I like that smell. I hope I get to smell that again. And I did. Anyway, flowers, certain flowers remind you of a place and a time, and sometimes they bring back horrible, horrible memories. So in Hebrew, remembering it calls the past into the present, so it changes what you do next. Forget the rescue and your fist closes. If you forget how you were rescued, your fist closes. Remember, I told this story about the dear lady who came to church and was escorted out. And as I understand it that very day, she got hit by a car, not far, not far at all from the church, and was killed. Imagine if the hands were open as they were supposed to be. Don't let that happen in your life. So, thread three, the hand. Moses' hand carrying new stone, Israel's foot in Egypt's ditches. Remember, I talked about that, how they used their foot. And I talked about how modern translations, you know, even English translations, they didn't have any understanding of what the ancient Near Eastern language, culture, and context was. They were the foot. I don't know what that means. They thought, well, this is just something we're not going to know. But this, I explained why in great detail. I do also in the blog post and the study guide on TrueWordfaithforlife.com. Anyway, Israel's foot in Egypt's ditches. The doubled command to open your hand, the king's hand holding a pen. Can you imagine? Can you imagine?

SPEAKER_00

The farmer's hand on a basket.

SPEAKER_01

Behind every one of them. Chapter 26, verse 8. The mighty hand and the outstretched arm that came first. Thread four. The ones with nobody. The fatherless. The widow and the sojourner. They show up in chapters 10, 14, 16, 24, and 26. Chapter 10, verse 19 tells you why. Love the sojourner, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. Remember where you've been. Remember where you've been. And I talked about the lady that was killed, hit by a car, and sort of escorted out of church. Oh man. Folks in church forgot to open their hand. They forgot where they were because they were once right where that lady probably was. Maybe they weren't living the kind of life she was living. Maybe they were, and they forgot. And they closed their hand. Thread number five, the heart. Levav. Chapter 10, verse 16. Circumcise your heart. Chapter 15, verse 10, your heart shall not be grudging. Chapter 17, verses 20, that his heart may not be lifted up. Chapter 26, verse 16, with all your heart and with all your soul. In Hebrew, in Hebrew, the heart is where you think, decide, and you want. It's the control room of the whole person. Every command, every single command this week was aimed at the control room. And that's where tonight goes to your heart. Well, start with the architecture. The architecture. On Monday, God wrote ten words on a second set of stones. And for four days, Moses wrote law after law.

SPEAKER_00

Writing, you seem like, oh wow.

SPEAKER_01

And some folks, you know, they'll say sometimes, well, we don't live in the age of the law. That's legalism. We don't live in the age of the law. I don't stay in the Old Testament because it's the New Testament that really, really, really, really, really matters. Miss Colleen, it might be also on the vanity in between, if it's not on my shirt, but I don't remember taking it off. I know I'm panicked over it. I don't need it. I just normally put it on right here. And I tapped my chest and I didn't have it. So then for four days, Moses gave law after law, and we and we, a lot of people will, the postmodern Western Evangelical Church will avoid talking about this, or even the Old Testament, or even Torah at all. But for four days, Moses gave law after law, worship, tithes, debts, judges, kings, witnesses, weights, and measures. And look, if you read it quickly, it feels like a junk drawer of ancient rules. But look, it isn't an it isn't a junk drawer at all. In 1979, a scholar by the name, thank you, thank you, Miss Carolyn, how kind of you. How compassionate. But this scholar in 1979, his name is Stephen Kaufman. He published a study, and it was so utterly amazing. It was incredible. I know I'm weird. I know. I know. Full on 100%. I wear it proudly. I love reading this study to start with. I love learning. My capacity to learn is substantially reduced. But here's the thing. What I know is that even though I can't learn like I did, and even though I don't know many of the things that I did, and I know that I don't remember things, whole you know, chunks of years from my life totally gone. If you're new, I suffered a severe brain injury and and uh I just suffered another one. Oh well. Anyway, Stephen Kaufman he published this study showing that Deuteronomy, and I point to that by the way, this study, and I give you a link in the study guide that I'm referring to on TruewordfaithLife.com. TruewordfaithLife.com under the blog button. So he studied, he published this study showing that Deuteronomy 12 through 25 follows the order of the Ten Commandments, one commandment at a time, worked out in ordinary life. You say, why? Well, watch how it lines up with your week. Watch, I mean, it's just absolutely amazing. And you think, you know, these are these are kind of brutal people. These are this is the ancient Near East, right? Things were different then. They weren't like, you know, we look back with these spectacles on my face and to help me see, I could barely see without them. And I have hearing aids and I can barely hear without them. And we have all these things. If you could see this array of things that enable me to do what I'm doing right now, without it, I couldn't do it. Without the help I have, I couldn't do it. So the thing is, is you know, we look back and we make assumptions. Well, it's sad that we do, because quite honestly, we should have some more humility. Because where we are now, people, if we're still here and the Lord hasn't come back for his people, well, it's gonna be, it's gonna be that way, right? It's gonna be that way, and ultimately, we will have to learn to operate within that. We'll say, well, back in my day, right? We'll have this whole thing that we say, and we'll look back. And the people, you know, hey, look, there are kids that don't know how to dial a telephone. Like a dial telephone, they're like, I don't know, what is that? I don't even what is how do you even use that? Record players, you know, they've they've come back into vogue for the audio files because there's something special about records, um, the sound rendering. The point is, is there are a lot of people that they don't even know what that is. You know, many don't, many alive now have no concept of 9-11. None whatsoever. So tricky. It's tricky and it's anachronistic to take what we know now in arrogance and go go back and we say, well, this is dumb. These people are dumb. No, they weren't dumb, they were just ancient. It was all new. World was pretty young. But I want you to watch how it lines up with your week. Chapter 12, by the way, is anybody can you still hear me? Chapter 12 gathers worship into the one place God chooses, and that's the first and second commandments. No other gods, no images. Right? Chapter 13 guards against well, it guards God's name against false prophets. That's the third. Then the fourth commandment, the Sabbath or Shabbat. And what did we find there on Wednesday? The tithe cycle, the year of the release and the pilgrim feast, the seventh year is the Shabbat, stretched across the calendar. The open hand is the Sabbath, rest handed to the poor. By the way, and nonos user name here. Well, you know, you do that because you're ashamed of yourself. You should be. Um, the fact is, they ask, why was Jesus cool with slavery? The world was four billion years old. Well, you know, doesn't matter how old you or I or anybody else thinks it is. What matters is the process all along from then till now. So you can be an angry person. Thank you, Miss Carolyn. You can be an angry person. Um, and you can say that it was slavery and all of these things, and wow, he was okay with that, or you can listen and learn. Listening and learning requires two things you may be short of patience and humility. Up to you. You wasted your life, guy. Sad. Well, yeah. You know, if if that's your perspective, I pray that something along the way changes your mind because you are bound for an eternity in suffering. And I hate that for you, but I can't change your mind. I can I can tell you the truth and you can accept it or reject it. Up to you. And and I find that very sad. I do. I hate it. Because I think, man, if if I could just teach with more power, if I could be more convincing, right? I thought that for years, persuasive, how persuasive I could be in in my teaching and preaching, right? What if, man, if I if I was if I was, I don't know, more persuasive, made better arguments. Maybe some people, like anonymous user name here. It's just that's so chumpy to go from live to live, with no real agenda other than you're wrong. Get your own Facebook channel, too chicken to show your face. I can't stand wusses. Let me just tell you this: this is free of charge at no cost or obligation to you. Christians were never, believers, followers of the way, were never called to be wusses. So, people like this. Just like on that plane when when all those Jews, what a sad day for the guy who thought, I'm gonna kill all these Jews all at once. What a sad, sad day. Yeah, well, God bless the pilot who fought. God bless all of the passengers who said, Mm-mm, Holocaust ain't happening again. October 8th, mm-mm. October 7th, it ain't happening again. October any, uh November any, it ain't happening again. We ain't fooling this time. I don't blame them, and neither do I. The seventh year is the Sabbath, it's stretched across the calendar. The open hand is the Sabbath rest, and it's handed to the poor. Then the fifth, honor your mother and your father. See, I switched it around, honor your father and mother is what it says. But I switch and put my mom first, you know. Kaufman, he reads chapters uh 16 through 18 as the laws of authority, judges, priests, prophets, and the king. If you never learn to respect your parents, as jacked up as they may have been, you're never gonna learn to respect authority. Let alone judges, priests, prophets, and the king of kings. That fellow, or lady, woman, who was here. You know, that's a zero respect person. I respect who I who earn it. Who's earned it? I'd be curious about that. So Thursday's king, copying the Torah by hand. Can you imagine? Copying a Torah by hand. That king lives under the commandment about honoring authority, and even there, he's told to rule, maybe some of you will remember this, as a brother, then murder. In chapters 19 through 21, cities of refuge and witnesses who protect a life, adultery and purity in chapters 22 and 23, theft in chapters 23 and 24, false witness and justice in court in chapters 24 and 25, and coveting at the end of chapter 25, with two sets of weights in the bag, one to buy with and one to cheat with. Coveting with a thumb on the scale. Scholars debate exactly where each line falls. The pattern itself has held for more than 40 years. And there's a guy by the name of Daniel Bloch. He wrote a commentary, he wrote several commentaries, but he wrote a commentary on Deuteronomy and builds on it. So in TrueWord, um, faithforlife.com under the blog and go down to the study guide on this particular past week. You'll find links to all these people that I'm mentioning. You'll find links to the work. It's super easy. Super, super easy. Easy for you. It wasn't easy for me, but it's easy for you. Why not take advantage of my work? So the pattern itself held for more than 40 years. And Daniel Bloch's commentary on Deuteronomy, it builds on it. Now, feel what that means. The laws you heard all week weren't new rules stacked on top of the tin. They were the second stones unfolded. The same words walked out in the field, the courtroom, the market, and the palace, where they lived, and where you and I lived. Well, and then there's chapter 26. The basket. After every commandment has been lived out, the law code ends with the farmer saying thank you. Ten words lived out, ending in worship. I want you to hold on to that because it's about to matter. Now, the language. When Moses says, Love the Lord your God, Israel heard the vocabulary of kings. In 1963, the Assyriologist William Moran, he showed what that he showed that across the ancient Near East. He showed that love was a treaty language. In the 1300s BC, Canaanite kings, writing to Pharaoh in the Amarna letters, used to, they used the word love to mean loyalty. I talked about a vassal, a vassal who loved the great king, kept faith with him, and he kept his terms. And that language lasted for centuries. In 672 BC, the Assyrian king Esaraddin made his vassals swear an oath of loyalty to his son, the crown prince Ashurbanepal. The oath commands them to love Ashur Banepal as they love their own lives. Well, then in 2009, archaeologists digging at Tel Kadyanat, in what's now called southern Turkey, they found a copy of that very oath. They found it in the innermost room of the temple in the excavators. The excavators, they believe it stood there on display, a sacred object set before the God. And the oath itself curses anyone who would destroy or alter the tablet. Do you hear the echo? Israel's tablets rested inside the ark, in the Holy of Holies. In Deuteronomy 31, verse 26, the book of the law was set beside the ark. Kings across that world housed their treaties before their gods. Israel's great king housed his covenant in his own dwelling in the middle of his people. And that treaty world reached Jerusalem. That's our Adam. Own building inscription lists the Western kings who served him. And one of them is named Manasseh. You probably have heard it pronounced Manasseh. Manasseh, King of Judah. Judah's kings knew exactly what a loyalty oath sounded like. So, if love is treaty language, what makes Israel's covenant different? Take a breath. Are you ready? Deuteronomy 10, verses 14 and 15. Heaven and the heaven of heavens belong to the Lord your God, the earth with all that is in it. Yet the Lord set his heart in love on your fathers. The Hebrew word, the Hebrew word is kashach, kashach, to be attached, bound, drawn to. And elsewhere it describes a man whose heart is set on a woman. It was very much a foreign thing. The emperor didn't love his people first. But by deep contrast, Israel's great king did. That king. The covenant began with God's heart before Israel had anything to offer. But now the hard part. An oath can command loyalty. It can't create desire. Ezar Haddon found that out.

Twenty years after the oath, Ashurbana, his own brother, the king of Babylon, rose up again.

Moses knew Israel's heart would do the same. Look just past this week's chapters to Deuteronomy 29, verse 4. After the plagues, the sea, the manna, and the water from the rock. To this day the Lord has not given you a heart to understand, or eyes to see, or ears to hear. And in Hebrew, Lev led, a heart to know. It goes further in chapter 31, verse 21. God tells Moses, I know what they're inclined to do even today, before I've brought them into the land. Lean back into that for a second. God rewrote the stones with his eyes wide open. He renewed the covenant knowing they'd break it again. The second stones weren't some sort of gamble. Wasn't a gamble that God was making on Israel. They were a commitment from God. So he built the answer into the furniture. Sounds funny, I know. He built the answer into the furniture, the tablets inside the ark, the book beside it, a witness against a stubborn people, and over both the caporet, the mercy seat. Exodus 25, verse 21. Once a year on the day of atonement, the high priest sprinkled blood there, the law below accused, the blood above covered. Aren't we happy about that? Isn't that something to celebrate? Thank the Lord. Well, then comes the promise. I've been telling you about a promise, and here it is. You have to hear what Moses, where he sets it, Deuteronomy 30, verse 1. When all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse, and you call them to mind among all the nations where the Lord your God has driven you. Well, that's exile. Moses is speaking to a people who have already failed. They've already scattered. They're already at the bottom. And to them, verse 6 The Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live. Seems like a good thing. Now I want you to lay the Hebrew side by side. Chapter 10, verse 16. It's difficult to pronounce. Same verb, mole, it's from which the moil, the one, the uh rabbi that comes on the eating and cuts the foreskin of the Jewish children. It's called the moyle. That's what this comes from. Mole to cut. The only thing that's changed is who's holding the knife. Can you imagine? Hey, I'm just gonna tell you. God has done so much for us. He's given us this. And if you know what you're looking for and how to interpret it, if you understand the language, culture, and context of the ancient Near East where all of this happened, I'm telling you, it it makes the Bible read like a movie, the best movie you've ever seen. The command shows you the heart you need. The promise gives you the heart you cannot make. My friends. To understand. I talked a lot about picking up your Bible. I talked a lot about understanding the need to daily read God's word, study his word. I talked a lot about prayer, having a conversation with God. Well, Miss Garland, you're it is the honor of a lifetime to help all of you understand. The thing that moves me here is, and it really drives me, is understanding that the commands are out of a heart of love. The promises, look, we can't keep our promises. We can't half keep our promises. We struggle with that. That's why we can't make ourselves change, right? Why can't I change? Not because you're uniquely broken, it's because nobody can. And there are sticky notes throughout the house, including the front door and and the door to this uh little room here, and and then to uh there, then they're in the kitchen and they're in a bunch of places reminding us where to put God. Sticky notes are helpful, but they don't change you. It's what you do with that information. You say, Man, I would, I will pick up the scripture, I'll pick up the Bible once I can get motivated. No, no, that's not how it works. It's the other way around. You pick this Bible up, you start studying. You make time. You don't give them the leftover time, you make time. And you say, nothing will stand in the way. And that will bring more motivation. Listen, it's a beautiful thing. We have so many ways to study God's word. We have so many ways to understand God's word. Look, you have this, you have me. Six days a week, sometimes seven. You have all the resources at True Word Faith for Life with Dr. Sean, S-H-A-W-N on YouTube. You have all of those. You have all the ones at True Word FaithforLife.com. That's right, Robbie. The Lord is my God. He's number one. Remember what I told you? Robbie remembers. I said, write it out on a sticky note, put it everywhere, put it on the doors. Remember, I talked about the mezuza, what Jews have, and many other people, when we get to the final house we're going to be in, um, I'm going to put some mezuzas up on the front door and the main doors where we go in and we go out. Has a miniature Torah inside of it to remind us who God is and who we're not and who we are and whose we are. Look, the promise wasn't made to people who'd finally gotten it right. It was made to people in exile. That's who the promise was made to. Some of you throughout the week, you really got it. You really, really got it. You sent me messages like, all this time I've read this and I didn't understand where it was pointing, because I've said for many years, Yeshua is a crimson thread throughout all of Scripture. Now I want you to watch who holds the knife. Centuries later in Jeremiah 31, verses 31 through 33, God says, Behold, the days are coming when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant I made with their fathers, my covenant that they broke. I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. Listen to what he doesn't say. He doesn't promise a new law. The word is Torah. Torah, my law, my Torah. The new covenant doesn't change what's written, it changes where it's written. Please tell me you got that. It doesn't change what's written, it changes where it's written. Right here. So Monday's second stones all over again. Same words, new surface. And notice who received the promise first: the house of Israel and the house of Judah. God has never stopped loving the people he set his heart on. Romans 11, verse 29. The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. Those of us from the nations are grafted into their root, were never planted in its place. And to that I'm addressing, and I'm wanting you to understand, to that I'm addressing those who believe in replacement theology. Those who believe somehow or another, we have replaced the Jews. Well, we haven't. Gentiles, Christians, we do not supplant the Jews, God's chosen people. We do not replace them. Ezekiel 36, verses 26 and 27 names the surgery. I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh, and I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes. Oh, a heart of stone. Liv ha avin. Liv ha avin. The covenant was written on stone, and the people's hearts had turned to stone. So God says, I'll take out the stone heart and I'll write on flesh. The Ruakakodesh, the Holy Spirit moving in, doing from the inside what the tablets could only demand from the outside. Then the Son of God walked into a wilderness. Then the Son of God walked into a wilderness. Matthew or Metatiahu 4, 40 days, the way Israel had 40 years. Deuteronomy 8, verse 2 says, God led Israel through the wilderness to know what was in your heart. Now the same test comes to Yeshua. Three times he answers from Deuteronomy. Did you know that? His answers that he gave the enemy were from Deuteronomy, man shall not live by bread alone. Chapter 8, verse 3, you shall not put the Lord your God to the test. Chapter 6, verse 16, you shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve. Chapter 6, verse 13. You know, if Yeshua knew Torah so well, why don't we? The wilderness asked what was in Israel's heart, and the answer broke them. The wilderness asked, What was in his heart, and the answer was perfect love. Thank you, Robbie. You're so kind, thank you. Yeshua is the only one who ever had the heart, Deuteronomy demanded. And then he gave it away. On the night he was betrayed, Luke 22, verse 20, he lifted up the cup and said, This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. Jeremiah's covenant, the heart covenant, paid for in the blood, the mercy seat always pointed toward. Now, I want you to go back to Deuteronomy 30, verse 14. The word is very near you, and it's in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it. Shaol or Paul quotes it in Romans 10, verse 8. The names near the word, the word of faith that we proclaim. Verse 9: if you confess with your mouth that Yeshua is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. I'm going to give you an opportunity in a few minutes to do just that, to confess with your mouth that Yeshua or Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. In just a few minutes, minutes you have that opportunity. The word Moses, the word Moses said was near you, has a name. And his name is Yeshua. Paul or Shaul ties the whole thread together in two different places. Romans 2, verse 29. Circumcision is a matter of the heart by the Spirit. And in 2 Corinthians 3, verse 3, you're a letter from Messiah written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts. Stone tablets, stone hearts. Then the Spirit writes on flesh. You couldn't change your own heart. So he gave you his. No more white knuckle effort. You tried that. You stopped trying to perform heart surgery on yourself. And you put yourself in the surgeon's hands every morning this week. The way Deuteronomy shows. And when do you start? You start tonight. Name the one change you failed to make over and over. The tempter. Maybe you're the tempter, maybe you're the tempted. The habit, the grudge. Say it out loud to God. Then say this. I can't change my own heart. You promised you would. I'm asking you to do it. Then every morning for the next seven days, before you touch the phone, do three things the way Israel did them.

SPEAKER_00

Are you ready?

SPEAKER_01

First, like the king, copy one verse by hand. Thank you, Sean spelled correctly. God bless you, brother. Thank you so much. Hello, Tima, my dear brother. So nice to see you. I miss chatting with you. That's a good dude right there, man. Overcome so much. First, like the king, you copy one verse by hand. Start with Deuteronomy 30, verse 6. Yeah. Believe it or not, you take a pen. This is not the pen that I'm missing. Miss Colleen, give a report in the thing there. I'm really hoping that I didn't do something. I don't know. Hopefully the laundry's not. Hopefully it's not in the laundry and it's now made everything blue. Oh, I'd be devastated. So first, like the king, you copy one. By the way, Miss Colleen made this with her sister, and her sister's husband made this as wood. Sweet. Very touching. I'll treasure it forever. You copy one verse by hand. It's one verse. It's not super long. You start with Deuteronomy 30, verse 6. Pen and paper. Slowly. Something happens when your hand forms God's words that never happens when your eyes skim them on this. Second, like the farmer, like the farmer, man do I love farmers. I have such respect for them. Like the farmer, you say your confession out loud. I was perishing. And God saved me. I was perishing and God saved me. God rescued me. I was bound for hell. And God saved me. Third. And I think I probably did three. The brain to the body sometimes doesn't operate properly. Like I'll say, I'll be looking right at a fork and I'll call it a spoon. Can you hand me the spoon? Or I mix up words that are similar things. So I probably did this or this, and then, but now it is third. Third like the year of release. Open your hand to one person that day. A debt canceled, a gift given, an hour handed over. Can you imagine? Can you imagine how a person who really, really needs it? Old Glow, Linda, and Susan. Old Glow could use a visit. You know who I'm talking about. Precious, precious lady. My goodness. One hour. I know with with her you hate to spend one hour because it's such a treasure. She's such a treasure. And I know you're both very busy. But I ask you both to pray about that if that's one thing that you could do. One hour. Just tell her you got an hour.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know what debts are owed you, and I don't know what debts you owe. And you might be tempted to say, well, nobody's canceling any debts for me. So why would I cancel any for it's not about everybody else, your heart. And listen, if you lead a family or a group, do it together. If you don't, by yourself. Read the verse at breakfast if you have breakfast or read the verse when you first get up. Say the confession around the table if you have children. Let the kids watch your open hand. Let them see. Then watch what the Ruakakodesh, the Holy Spirit, does over seven mornings. You do that every morning. You watch what he does over seven mornings. Not because you finally tried hard enough. It's because you finally stopped trying to be your own surgeon. So I have for you a challenge and a choice. And here's the choice in front of you tonight or today, whatever time you're listening. You can keep standing at the mirror with your sticky notes. You can make another resolution. Oh, we all know the January 1st resolutions, the New Year's resolutions, and by January 3rd, the gyms are empty once again. Another fresh start on the first of the month, another round of shame when it falls apart by Thursday. That road ends where Israel's 40 years ended. Plenty of miracles and still no heart to understand. You know, we look from this place and we say, Amin, Amen. Yod Shin Vav Ain. Amen. Someone speaking Hebrew in the chat. I wonder if we have someone listening from Israel. We've had people listening from all over the world. Why not? Plenty of miracles and stuff. We we look, we look, we say, how? How could they have not followed God to the letter? He split the sea. And then he closed the sea on the enemy, chasing him, killing them all. How? Why would they? Manna, we're hungry. Food falls from heaven every day. How? We have miracles that occur in our lives all the time. And yet, and yet, and yet, we still don't have a heart to understand. Listen, that's you could do that, or you could you could do what Moses pointed toward at the end of his life. God bless him. I can't wait to meet him. Oh boy. I can't wait to meet him. I can't wait to hug him. If he'll let me, I don't know. He might not. I can't wait to thank him. But look at what Moshe or Moses pointed toward at the end of his life. Admit you can't do the surgery on yourself. Lie down on the table. Let God do what he promised in Deuteronomy 30 and what Yeshua paid for with his own blood. Moses put it to Israel in Deuteronomy 30, verse 19. I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life. Choosing life here doesn't mean trying harder at the mirror. It means turning your face toward the one who promised to do what you can't. Which is it, the sticky note or the surgeon? Which one are you trusting when you wake up tomorrow? Prayer isn't asking for an easy journey, it's asking for a strong back. I want you to pray with me, and we're also going to pray for you. Um, Robbie, I believe you have a surgery coming up. Remind us of when that is. Heavenly Father, you know how many times we've promised to change. I'll speak for me. Many, too many. You've heard every confession, you've heard the same ones again and again, and we've tried to fix our own hearts, and we have failed. And some of us have quietly decided that we're the exception to your grace. Tonight we stop pretending we can do the surgery ourselves. You set your heart on us before we ever loved you. You rewrote the stones with your eyes wide open. You watched over the land. You opened your hand to us when we were slaves. You humbled kings and lifted the widow and the orphan. And you promised exiles that you'd circumcise their hearts. And we ask that you do it now with us. Take out our heart of stone. Father God, give us a heart of flesh. Ruakakodesh, the Holy Spirit, move in and write the word where we can't erase it. And thank you for Yeshua. Thank you for Jesus. Glory to God. Thank you for Yeshua, the only one who ever loved you with all of his heart, who poured out his blood for the new covenant and gave his heart for us and to us. Heavenly Father, we pray, pray for our brother, Robbie. You know the challenges that he meets every day. You know the challenges of all those who are listening now, live or on playback, you know them. You know them better than they know themselves. I ask, Father, that you move in those situations. Some of them, many of them are so serious. I ask that you give comfort. I ask that you give a beautiful appreciation of time every moment. I ask that you give comfort. We pray also for Tommy, you know who he is, and for the family that's caring for him. He has cared so deeply and so much for so many, asking nothing in return. I pray for him that you would bless him. Give him comfort, give him peace, give him your presence, give him pain relief, just as I ask for our brother, and for our sisters who have had many surgeries, so many, and some who face more even. I ask that you move in their bodies. Give them the right people to do the surgery on their bodies. I ask that you touch them supernaturally. I ask that we trust you fully, no anxiety and no fear, and that those who are around see them and are blown away from how utterly incredible their peace, their supernatural peace, how that is, and they see it and they don't understand it, and we tell them it's Yeshua Adunai Elohim. I pray this in the name of your son, Yeshua Hamashiach. Amen. Look, if tonight you see that you've spent your whole life trying to become good enough for God, and you've never once let him give you a new heart, I want you to hear this. You don't fix yourself first, you come exactly as you are, and God does the surgery. I told you I would give you an opportunity, and here it is. Pray this with me. Yeshua, I need you. I believe you died for me and rose from the grave. I surrender my life to you today. Forgive me, fill me, lead me.

SPEAKER_00

I am yours. In your name.

SPEAKER_01

Amen. Oh man, come on. If you prayed that tonight, God did what no resolution could, what what no game plan, what no booklet, none, nothing. He did what no resolution ever could. He gave you a new heart. And the Rakhakadesh, the Holy Spirit, moved in. I want you to do this. Don't be ashamed. Either in comments if you're listening on playback or you're not in the live chat. In comments, type the two words new heart in the chat so that we can reduce, rejoice with you. And and type new heart in the chat if you are in the chat and you prayed and believed, so we can celebrate with you. Also, I'm very, very happy to help you any step of the way. I'm sure you have questions. It's complicated. But I want you to tell one believer, this part is very important, one person that you know to be a believer in your life. Tell them this week, tell them out loud. And then I will help you if you if you don't have any idea around you what would be a good church, I'll help you find a Bible-believing community near you. Because a new heart grows best among brothers and sisters. And if you don't know where to start, just reach out to me through true wordfaithfullife.com. You might say, hey, and there's a contact thing on the top and on the side. You say, hey, Dr. Sean, I don't, I don't know what to look for in a Bible. I don't know what to look for in a church. I will absolutely help you. I will absolutely help you. Brian, I don't know. I have no idea what your question is about, but I have a master's in theology and two doctorates in theology. I would have to say yes. And I've read it in Hebrew and Koine Greek and and Aramaic and and uh I'm trying to understand. I'm a follower of the way. I'm not a Christian, I'm a follower of the way. Um, you would you would read me as Protestant, but uh, I'm a follower of the way. So I guess we'll find out in a couple of texts why you're asking that specific thing. So look, if you don't know where to start, true wordfaithforlife.com. If you have a bunch more questions, um, as we're coming to a close, go to True Word. This is for you, Brian, and anybody else. Go to True Word FaithforLife.com and um in contact, and I will get back in touch with you as soon as I receive it. I will absolutely do that. And Susan, thank you so much. That means so much to me. Um, you have no idea the hours and hours and hours um that I put into curating the music. It sounds crazy, but some of the stuff is are things that I have composed and others are other that we buy. We this is it's crazy expensive to do this. You know, I was under this, uh I I labored under this delusion that you just get a, you know, you get a phone and you do this. And some people go viral by doing that. They do it, God bless them. I mean, good for them. It's it's hasn't happened with me. It hasn't happened. I've done almost 6,000 videos and we're at 4,000 uh subscribers thereabout. So, you know, we do it every day. We we stay in it. Listen, I'm gonna give you some shalom and then I'm gonna I'm gonna pray over you, you know, pray a blessing over you. First, I'm gonna pray it in Hebrew, and then um uh I uh I will absolutely translate it for you. So don't panic. Don't panic. Uh no, I have deconstructed from the biblical word world. Okay. What can I tell you? Love the music tonight too. Thank you, Miss Carolyn. Anyway, you were never gonna change yourself, folks. I was never, you were never. The stones broke in Moshe's hands and Moses' hands. You know, he he threw them down, of course, but the water ran through Egypt's ditches and the fists stayed closed. This past week, this is what we've experienced together. The king forgot, the basket sat empty. Forty years of miracles and still no heart. But the God who set his heart on you, he set his, I hope you hear this. I hope you're, I hope you hear this. He set his heart on you first. He never left you standing at the mirror. He kept the same words and changed the surface. He wrote them again on softer ground, on you and on me. So rest today or tonight in a promise older than your failures, a promise made to exiles. The Lord your God will circumcise your heart, not someday, not someday when you've earned it. He started the moment you said, I can't do it myself. Tomorrow morning we step into Deuteronomy 27, and Israel stands between two mountains to say Amen. Send this to the one person that you know is tired of failing at the same thing. It's easy. You send them the link, piece of cake. You tell them it was never their surgery to perform on themselves, to make themselves good enough. And you subscribe, you tap the little bell so tomorrow finds you. It's easy, it's free. I can't imagine why people wouldn't, but they don't. About less than 30% do. That listen of the thousands that have listened this week, only about 30% do. And those thousands, I'm only counting the ones that listen an average of 80 to 90 percent of the time. Thank you, uh Timo and uh Tima, love your music and I love what you do. Thank you so much. Very kind, very kind, thank you. Well, I did. I I flailed away for a lot of years, not doing what God told me to do and what he wanted me to do, and I just didn't do it. Bottom line, and when I say I've lived a kinetic life, trust me. True story. Now, I'm gonna pray this over you, and I want you to receive it in his heavenly name, Adunailoyinu, and in Lashon Hokodesh, which is the language of God, Hebrew, it's the language he spoke to them in, and it's the language they returned to him in. Don't panic, I'm gonna translate this for you, but I want you to receive it. Just let your heart, let your soul receive this. Yeshua himself was in the midst of getting his arms out and he was praying this over his people, and mid-sentence is when he rose to be with the Father. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace until tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, live. Shalom Bashem Yeshua, Veshalom Elachim.
