Perilous Times: A Prophetic Warning for the People of God

Difficult Times Will Come

1 But know this, that in the last days difficult times will come.

2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boasters, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,

3 unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, without gentleness, without love for good,

4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

5 holding to a form of godliness, but having denied its power. Keep away from such men as these.

6 For among them are those who enter into households and take captive weak women weighed down with sins, being led on by various desires,

7 always learning and never able to come to the full knowledge of the truth.

8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, disqualified in regard to the faith.

9 But they will not make further progress; for their folly will be obvious to all, just as Jannes’s and Jambres’s folly was also.

Persecutions Will Come

10 But you followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance,

11 persecutions, and sufferings, such as happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and out of them all, the Lord rescued me!

12 Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

13 But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

The Word of God Equips Us

14 But you, continue in the things you learned and became convinced of, knowing from whom you learned them,

15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16 All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness,

17 so that the man of God may be equipped, having been thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Hebraic and ANE Context

Paul writes in Greek, but he thinks in Hebrew. His warnings about the last days are not merely about an apocalyptic horizon far off in the future, but about covenantal cycles of rebellion, judgment, and restoration that have always marked Israel’s history.

• “Perilous” (χαλεποί / khalepoi): This Greek word appears only twice in the New Testament (2 Tim 3:1, Matt 8:28 describing demon-possessed men). It does not mean “mild difficulty,” but fierce, savage, violent, crushing times. Paul paints a picture of days marked by demonic chaos.

• Desire and Action in Hebraic Thought: Verse 12 reminds us that “all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” In Greek (hoi thelontes), “to desire” is not a faint wish but a set will, a resolve that is lived out in action. In the Hebraic worldview, to desire to walk already means your feet are moving. Faith and faithfulness cannot be separated.

• Covenant vs. Chaos: In Hebrew thought, shalom is more than peace — it is order, wholeness, covenant faithfulness. Its opposite is not war but chaos (tohu va’vohu of Genesis 1:2). Paul warns Timothy that in the last days, chaos will invade and covenant will be despised.

What's in it for YOU?

Beloved, do these signs not echo our present moment?

• Political violence and assassinations.

• Moral collapse where shame is celebrated and holiness mocked.

• Gossip and slander elevated as “truth.”

• A generation trained to despise Israel, reject covenant, and abandon creation’s design.

Paul’s warning is not simply descriptive. It is prescriptive. He tells Timothy—and us—that the response is not survival, but faithfulness. We are called to:

1. Expect peril – do not be shocked by wickedness; Scripture told us.

2. Stand firm in covenant identity – we are Followers of the Way, not consumers of culture.

3. Guard our words – truth and wisdom are the language of covenant.

4. Live by the Spirit – even as the world grows more hostile.

The Challenge and a Choice

Here is the challenge: Will you be swept away in the perilous chaos, or will you stand as a covenant witness?

Here is the choice:

• Continue to live as if these days are normal, bending truth to culture.

• Or rise as the remnant of God, Followers of the Way who declare:

  “Not with my voice, not with my money, not with my life will I yield to chaos. I belong to Yeshua, and I will not bow to the spirit of this age.”
